  1. It's funny how one person's well designed is another's poorly designed. Some of my extended family moored their share boat at Aston, as the design of the fuel and pump out point drove them mad. For a start, if there's a boat on the service point it pretty much blocks the whole marina; and the one way system meant that at the end of a holiday, they'd go in, fuel up, then have to go out the exit and back in the entrance to get to their berth. Their syndicate moved the boat to somewhere else.
  2. Quite -- anyone wanting to be in Islington would probably regard them as not really being in London!
  3. I don't think there's any evidence of residential moorings going unsold in London, is there? Indeed, people seem to be prepared to pay very large sums for them.
  4. I heard a couple of weeks go that Andy Munro had died. I think he was only 54. I had no more information than that.
  5. Sign up for the Boater’s Update emails, and you’ll get all this stuff first hand.
  6. Near where new marinas opened. Can you see anyone building a marina in London?
  7. Don't choose any name that's going to make you sound daft on the VHF on the Thames etc. Just think of those Clipper captains rolling their eyes, and having all their worst thoughts about narrowboats confirmed.
  8. There will be an inquest. The police won’t really be able to say much before that. Inquests are public.
  9. When we were there in September, we went sent a map showing the visitor mooring. There is no jetty, you just moor up against the wall.
  10. I wasn’t talking about changing what was there, I was talking about freshening up existing sign writing when the shading etc has faded a bit.
  11. It is. And it can be touched up. Some friends got their sign writer to do this after about ten years, and it looked like new again. Proper sign writers work surprisingly quickly even when starting from scratch, so touching up what’s already there can be done in very little time.
  12. I can’t see where you moored at Salford because your maps just show me where I am now. But the designated mooring is by the Holiday Inn Express, by the service block. The local council also like people to tell them if they’re planning to spend the night there. There seem to be a few more people doing this trip, not least because of the breach. I suspect this will mean one of two things: either the MSC people will get more used to narrowboats; or they’ll do more to try to discourage them!
  13. That’s a boat fitted out by a small firm. If you search the guy’s name you’ll find his Facebook page. if you particularly like his work, why not get in touch with him and ask if he ever does boat’s with the things you want, and if so how much would it cost. Builders like this often just build boats on spec and then put the up for sale, but they often make each boat different and might be open to building one to your requirement. This may, however, result in you having to sign a contract on a yet-to-be-built boat, and making stage payments etc.
  14. Is the culvert a CRT asset? The one on the W&E that collapsed the other week belongs to Severn Trent Water —which presumably means they’ll be paying to fix it. Does anyone know who owns this one?
  15. 28 is a maximum! When we did it the other day, there was a boat ahead which appeared to be at least half way through, and we caught them up before the end.
  16. 40 minutes? I usually aim for 28! Edited to add: Did you spot the side shaft?
  17. At certain times, I guess even people who own a boat wouldn't necessarily be able to say they'd been on one in the previous two weeks.
  18. It's actually a quote from the West Mids Fire spokesman, but don't let that stop you having a go at the journo.
  19. And that's just the current grant -- what they're worried about is what happens when the current 15 year agreement runs out. There's no guarantee of any government funding after that.
  20. There are these notes made by Andy Tidy from the National Users Forum, and if you ask Richard Parry he'll tell you, as this post in another thread demonstrates.
  21. Again, it’s not really aimed at individuals. It’s so CRT can say to the government that the £50miion a year grant provides facilities used by x million people — and should continue.
