  1. We have a generic usb socket wired direct to the fuse box. It will take 2 usb and when I bought it I checked its maximum output was safe for a tablet 2.1 and phone, simultaneously. It wasn't a cheap Chinese thing ( or so I thought) having all the relevant standards. Started smouldering last year when iPad plugged in after about 2 years service. Fuse did not go, fortunately I smelt it and disconnected the line quickly. We used to leave it on when we boated ... Tablets seem to draw lots of power (well2.1 amps through crapy bits of Chinese electrics.
  2. Haven't been up for years had a bad reputation, cycled on tandem 2 years ago as canal ring up Erewash down Nottingham. Rough looking locals fishing in the locks smoking dodgy substances.... Who then smiled chatted and insisted on helping us lift the huge bike over anti motorbike barriers, asked us where we were from etc. Hoping to make the festival, if we are out of dock. Remember having to go in in long Eaton to get a tyre of the prop, no shower on the boat and April, back in the 80s. Cycled back to sawley and smuggled myself into the shower...
  3. The only trouble we had with Thaxted was the top, many years ago. Atalanta being a little woolwich was just a disaster , until we rebuilt her. She now lies on the summit but I doubt if she could get down now.
  4. There is another issue too tied in to labour. I know it is not as bad in the uk, but a goodly number of under 30s have huge expections. Having worked for 35 years in mental health the evidence is for many high prevalence mood disorders, a sense of worth and purpose surpasses medication and ' therapy' . however when informed of this I have been told countless times by unqualified 'patients' that they won't get out of bed for less than $50 an hour ( £29). thats more than I was getting as a nurse consultant. they sure as hell ain't going to get that labouring for the crt. I remember when my friends went manpower service working for the dole in the 1980s on the kennet. The canal got fixed and some of them went on to have good careers in associated businesses. back to the 80s and thatcherism then ... did I really say that must be a baby boomer.
  5. The problem is new 18 months circa. I think it's a circular issue bulge in lock and wing walls. Others with large boats have discussed on this forum I think in stoppage section on here Sorry can't look upside down fixing 12v fridge in camper in Australia in 35 odd degrees!! Just like boats
  6. Pete we got through napton in October. I had a good look while the boat was dropping. The lock appears banana shaped with a bulge at the bottom in front of the gates. We had circa 2" all way round but of course our big woolwich is only 57 feet, though mightly rigid with the 6mm box section gunnel. The pound below needs to be full as the wing wall ain't parallel. We are back in the uk in April and while I know you know what you are doing will always help.' as an aside one of our quotes on the southern Stratford used to be ' curry the sides and take a run at it" referred to the day I was witnessed in a mighty temper on Thaxted having tried to get through a lock coating last nights supper remains on the rubbing guard before charging the lock. it worked (madras if you were going to ask)
  7. Yep but it's at pewsey that ups the value til you get to napton locks
  8. Round here the local council is the only one that doesn't do 'hard rubbish' pickup monthly( health and safety) everywhere else in Victoria 2 days before the hard waste days everyone puts their old TVs computers ( running machines !!! ) on the nature strip and they get picked up. Not here they all get fly tipped in the pine plantations creeks etc. the council solution is to put up cameras so they can tell the landowners where to clean up. It's only latrobeshire... an area of economic deprivation.. whats a hobby boater? Under different hats I've lived on boats carried with boats earned my living from boats and restored boats. Now I live 50/50 none of those has affected my desire to keep the canals clean. We often strip packaging off in the supermarkets and leave it for them and my parents introduced us to the joys of string bags in the 80s
  9. Actualy at that point you will kneel to the mighty Eco fan because if you remove the griddling rabbit from the stove top the Eco fan will go round and round and round, it will replace the crystal set as entertainment
  10. You are starting from the wrong place. All the galvanic idolators in braunston ( oh thank you smellchucker) hold the belief that they are retaining your metal molecules in suspension. boat to somewhere with good ley lines, where no one is plugged in disconnect your solar, throw your engine commencement device into the cut and wait. Ultimately your whole world will re evolve. Nothing will work and you will be killing rabbits and cooking them on the open fire. For a shortcut go buy Mabel and Forget me not . Straight back to the past. Wet suit not permitted .
  11. We just pull the whole rug out of the cabin and beat the crap out of any nearby tree trunk or post. Then we follow the procedure in the previous post. We had a boat with carpets a mains ring and a vacuum 13 years ago it was over rated, so we went back to 1937
  12. 99% of people do the right thing but the 1% who don't have a disproportionate negative on the rest of us. It doesn't matter who the 1% are as long as we attempt to mitigate their behaviour. I've long believed in zero tolerance but the cheese eating excuse monkeys always generate an excuse
  13. Quite so when I worked for the nhs we used to be advised to lease certain vehicles and in 2000 it was baby draggers. So my collegues without children is to drive 7 seat Picasso and other trash in spite of being child free, because their trendiness made their residuals high . of course I had a Mg Zs2.5 v6 with the bad boy full spoiler to visit patients...depreciation special when they went broke... Sorry my collegues without children all went to drive
  14. you are disposing of an asset to buy a depreciating chattel that has attached costs. we lived on one income and saved the other after we bought our boat to live , on worked overtime bought the cheapest ex repo house we could and worked up. house prices may fluctuate cyclically but in the long run asset prices increase . Chattels devalue to zero
  15. We have a turn of the century manual device. Doesn't flatten the batteries. then we stand the ecofan on the fridge and watch the dust fly back into the fire. have to remember to tether the cat first
  16. Back on topic I bought a halfords car battery in 2012 because they were within dragging distance of where the boats batteries had been removed . ( unplanned removal) . Smallest one I could get away with ( had to take by bike) has been starting the lister ever since.
  17. There are canals now that were dead when we started, Kennet, Rochdale, Huddersfield droitwich to name a few. None have closed since we started. yes there were lengthsmen yes bits were deeper yes there were less boats, yes you could name all the boats residential south of cowley lock. on the other hand most of birmingham and London were risky single handed and leaving an unattended boat no way. So its changed opening up the towpaths has been brilliant- you used to be locked in with the hoodlums at times, and as for the hordes of angry fishists its different and it will change again
  18. I paid money for it so it must work. snake oil. We had a fan in our Woodstove in Australia.( 8kw) It was 200 watts . You barely felt any difference and it was ducted round the fire. I recon the 200 watts turning the motor heated the room more
  19. I was so concerned about the divergence from scientific evidencing of world problems I decided to call what was known in my previous business as a 'f... it'
  20. Look we have evidenced all this clearly. Increased Eco fan use in the northern hemisphere caused a recent heatwave here in southern Victoria. Fact. It's equalised out here now as the uk has got warmer in the last few days the temp here dropped 18 degrees, and your stoves died down Fact aldi in Moe morwell and Traralgon the three towns in the Latrobe Valley where power used to be produced now have ample stocks of Eco fans as 'winter approaches' in the same way that on Boxing Day there were trays of hot cross buns Fact clearly Kinver canopies have 'acquired ' some of the fans destined for victoria. If you buy them and prevent their relocation your summer will be cold as the maelstrom of hot air from Victorian woodstoves will be interrupted . You could cause global cooling. Fact.
  21. "I'll just go and empty some of the full loo cassettes dear" " no leave them we are just going to Banbury and might need them later"
  22. I'm looking forward to some dodgy shopping at the Ann summers shop , c/o the zit banbury. Looks like a great place to get tied up.
  23. We sold up fed up on 2005 it's all over after 25 years on the cut. Emigrated 'we will never retire on a boat' creep back started in 2011 , by 2012 we had ' summer boat' by 2017 we were on her 7 months ( and had summer jobs in australia) now we count ourselves as uk resident on the boat... if it's in your blood you will overcome the changes especially if you have tried the dark side
