  2. You don't really need an air filter as the engine intake is not going to be subject to dust and grit. Having said that, it needs something to stop you dropping a nut or spanner down the air intake. Vetus engines (e.g. M4.xx) had an air filter box, but no filter in the box. On a previous boat with a Thorneycroft Mitsubishi, I actually got better fuel consumption when I threw the air filter out.

  10. It's leaks. I shut my gas off at the cylinder when I leave the boat. I can go back a couple of weeks later and without turning the gas on, light a burner on the hob which will burn for a few seconds before fading out. To me that confirms that I don't have a leak (as long as I haven't got a leak-through on the cylinder tap). When it wouldn't light, I searched, and found, a very slight leak on the regulator.

  12. “To the Baltic with Bob” is also an entertaining read, by Griff Rhys Jones.
  13. If only. Instead here they will be told they have been naughty boys and girls and now please go home. And probably offered a lift.

  15. We've just defrosted a pint of full fat milk that had been in the freezer for about four months and it was fine (mrs dor made panna cotta and pancakes). Since I have got used to black coffee we don't keep fresh milk in the fridge at all, but have frozen some milk in an ice tray. The cubes are kept in the freezer in a bag and gets used for coffee etc if someone wants a white coffee.
  16. And make sure that you use ferrules on the cable ends when connecting to screw contacts. Needed with multi strand cable unlike domestic T&E cable.
  17. Just another example of CRT’s complete lack of competence when it comes to awarding contracts (and much else).
  18. In my (admittedly inexperienced) opinion, the almost complete lack of policing of the rules, and the resulting contacts, are probably the biggest cause of the huge increase in cases. Just look at the Brecon Beacons fiasco, where at worst people were politely told to turn round.

  20. Fit the new isolator somewhere easy to get to, and just connect a bit of wire across the old isolator which is probably easier than removing it or trying to fit the new one in its place.
  21. I wonder if the boat had been comprehensively insured, whether the insurance company would try and wriggle out by saying the owners were negligent leaving the boat on tight lines on a river prone to significant level rises.
  22. My wife uses a 700 W "travel hairdryer". Whilst it draws quite a bit of power, it is only on for a short while so doesn't impact much on the batteries. She usually checks with me that it is ok to use, which it normally is.
  23. You need to establish what the base fridge is, then look for spares for that. The Shoreline label (RR46) doesn't relate to the fridge itself. Could be LEC or several others.

  25. I made my own from 18mm ply, copied from one of the foam ones, similar, but more square than the ones shown.
