  1. One of the locks on the Marsden flight HNC?
  2. It’s pretty left field perhaps but have you considered lifting out of the water and leaving it much nearer to you on dry land? Save you mooring fees but then you can’t nip out on the boat before the boat is finished of course. You would save on mooring and licence fees in the meantime. Many/most Springers don’t have a flat base so you would need to carefully chock. You may know someone that could accommodate that?
  3. If you have lost one of these at Aynho weir lock recently contact me as we found one the other day. It’s not a watch as these are usually more functional than an adornment and nowadays less common
  4. It’s quite obvious that initially they kept the s at the start of the product denoting it’s origin but the marketing department removed it. I agree Farecla G10 and G3 is great stuff but our circular application made swirly circular marks. When we did random size figure of eight applications it looked fine.
  5. You may well find boating without one more enjoyable. It makes you think a little more carefully when steering with better placement in the canal and will probably make you navigate better as a consequence.
  6. Apologies for bringing up an old thread but our Borg Warner velvet drive 1:1 10-17-004 is a little low on transmission fluid, still on the stick so not by much. the fluid that’s in the box is clear yet this thread ends with the comment that the fluid should be red. Matty is the Automatic Transmission Fluid - AQF. clear? If so it’s probably the one we want. I can’t find any thread with this 10-17-004 gearbox on the search
  7. We don’t know what you have bought the boat for, is it static use, holidays or livaboard? Before you start getting gizmos lithium batteries etc many boaters happily exist on 12v. without such things. Apart from a hairdryer for the Mrs we are fine like that but we do still have three 110a domestic batteries. We have 2 car style push in Phone and computer/ iPad chargers, fridge freezer etc. it’s always tempting to pull everything out stamp your mark on things you’ve just bought but if I were you it maybe best to travel up to Macclesfield and see how you get on before incurring significant cost. It looks like an older boat so presumably the previous owners were fine with that set up for some time. Did they explain what the switch’s that don’t seem to work were for and the random plug or can you get hold of them to ask? To me it looks OK, and you’ve already heard stuff that’s not quite correct , it’s all an opinion after all. The key is the setting on that switch which Nicknorman has covered, and it seems you were advised correctly in your first post. We have one of those unreliable switches which I’m sure will one day go wrong but it’s been OK with pretty hefty use for 15 years though not 360 days a year. Everyone seems to want an inverter nowadays but thats extra things to go wrong. However we don’t livaboard. If you do then it looks like there’s a lot of electoral work to do, but maybe it isn’t quite the right boat to livaboard on either without incurring much cost?
  8. I wondered why the vegetation has been cut down in a path there , thought someone had been trying to get their large dog out 🤣 It’s the river relief culvert now only flowing when the ground is really flooded. Im not sure but it’s possibly the original line of the river or could have been related to the adjoining flood meadow system. The flow through the Frome culverts a few yards nearer the rail bridge is pretty strong, I wouldn’t advise trying those. The flow is a wee bit more due to the leak from the canal currently 😱 Interesting to see from the inside. The Frome now flows to the left looking the other way, by the alder trees These are the river culverts - wouldn’t try them 😞
  9. A friend advises me that the Royal Navy consider it a bad show to polish brass. I’m not sure that’s quite right as much brass is polished when I see naval events. Perhaps it’s just the top brass that can lack polish?
  10. 2p? I’m sure it went up to 10p at some time, it was worth looking in hedgerows at that point. We did and the poor post office stores took back some proper grubby bottles.
  11. That second boat from New and Used looks reasonable to me, though it’s all been done up recently and may hide much that you may want to have seen. The price seems ok if all is working. Opinions vary on cruiser sterns for living onboard.
  12. Yes, about 25-30 mins drive from Braunston. 👍
  13. They look like the old wooden cooling towers from powers stations opposite bank . So is that Nechells power station with coal unloading, the cooling towers have fairly long gone and it’s now where Star City is I believe?
  14. My experience of Rugby and Braunston is that you can talk it through with them and get shown the boats they are selling (occasionally one under offer) usually without being rushed if you arrange a time first. They seem sensible enough to realise that being pleasant , listening and friendly may not sell the boats they currently have but may sell the next they are taking on. I’ve no experience of ABNB but they do sell a lot of reasonable boats and we rarely if ever hear a bad word on here.
  15. Hi Alan it’s usually you that cuts and pastes, with an eye for detail 🤣it was last blacked in 2022. “In October 2022 she was last blacked and in 2012 had 4 new anodes fitted. “ Much the best is to arrange to look at boats from three of the larger brokers round there, Braunston, Rugby boats and ABNB. They are all close and seem to have a larger than usual selection currently. This will help a lot to get an idea of what May or may not suit. This one is cheap, perhaps one of the better things. It would make a reasonable boat to potter around for a week at a time or enjoy for a weekend but not an ideal livaboard .
  16. Is the house still present John if not it must be sadly a recent demolition? Its very hard to see into the compound where the weir is these days, and seems to be mainly Park Homes. Ive been past that house by Down Hatherley a number of times and completely failed to spot it.... I dont think Im ever going to get one of these. The locomotive crossing the bridge further up was to my naivety the wrong way round, but I can only see properly that way round when I walk there 😆
  17. Theres a couple of threads on this. Note SCUMBLE not scrumble, Tonka as to be expected got it right ! Its also relevant as to the undercoat that you use. Done well its great. If painted exteriorly then you will need to paint with varnish once or ideally twice a year, that makes a big difference to longevity. Its a shame it seems to be a dying art on canals, interestingly seems to be revived on interiors. We need more Dave Moores and less artistes
  18. That’s not quite the case, as the subsequent support shows. Marstons closed it as they were selling it on. As we know they have been taken over by Carlsberg and have had the usual corporate stuff going on. It had huge potential as many pubs not tied have, especially quirky ones. It also has a good and reasonably wealthy wide catchment area. The owners of the land around may allegedly have deliberately made what used to be a nice rural travel to the pub much less pleasant too. The trouble is a fast buck for developers is more attractive and easier that a greater but slower buck with hard work for a person taking in a Pub. With government incentives that equation could easily turn round but it’s not really on any government agenda especially as they all want more houses to be built. Apologies particularly to Capt Pegg for diverting the thread , let’s all hope the future Greyhound publican will see the huge potential as a lovely pub in a great historic position and go for it.
  19. Well as you mention later you need to book, can’t book on the day and you can’t turn up in a van can’t dispose of this and that need to be a resident etc. it is no wonder there’s fly tipping. I fear it’s become worse since it became hived off by the council. It’s so stupid as the cost of fly tipping far exceeds the cost of a properly worked out contract. I suspect some problems relate to all sorts of foolish legislation that ultimately the great British Public manage to navigate around with a larger mess to clear up. The only good thing about the local tip is they still take motor oil from our boat. I can imagine a DNA style test soon to assess whether the oil was used in the councils district to prevent disposal. In contrast as I’ve been registered with the local dentist for years I can get seen surprisingly fast if ever in pain. Completely appreciate you can’t if not registered. You are though comparing a dire lack of trained dental professionals to a potential surfeit of workers with limited training requirements at the local tip.
  20. This Titan had troubles with leakage and needed a full restoration too 😊 I like the central engine bay with the large flywheel though
  21. It’s hard to see but is the main roof barrel shaped?
  22. Interesting, more thought had gone into this one than you often see. I hope @PaulJ leaves the Gideon bible behind The interior is fitted out from reclaimed church pews and doors from a Carmelite monastery https://rugbyboats.co.uk/listings/vanitas-62x10-cruiser-stern-widebeam-2013-nick-thorpe-owner/
  23. Its a worry overall. Three were booked in at 8am last week at Braunston, but theres no guarantee anyone coming the other way has received the warnings. By early start do you mean 5am or 6? Leaving it for much after 7 maybe too late, as they may set off a wee bit early. Perhaps a fee per transit would help to fund a CRT attendence. Surely someone from CRT needs to be at the other end stopping people entering near the booked time (Assuming that they have booked of course) Edit- it seems possibly that CRT do thankfully.
  24. Then theres the boaters who insist they pass on the left, and others who despite the obvious scenario insist that whatever obstacle/ lock/ happening/ they HAVE to pass on the right...
  25. Id rather they move the caps lock than the zero 🤪. Im happy with my 57 foot boat but we dont livaboard. The extra 13 foot seems to make a fair bit of difference with manoeuvrability on some of the tighter canals but maybe thats because I am not used to 70 foot? 62 foot is for the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, above that you cant really do the main section. But as dmr says most seem to avoid heavy locking so 70 makes sense from that but moorings can be less easy to obtain , plus its a bit more costly as fees are per foot/ meter
