  1. Virtual Greenie awarded. Thanks to all who care.
  2. I can find no references to 2 pack bitumen, nor have I ever heard of it. What is the product name and manufacturer?
  3. I always use an old wet vac, carefully, to draw the bottom of fuel tanks. Not blown myself up yet! Just pull a litre or so out at a time, don't fill the vac.
  4. It always chalks to grey eventually, I have never seen it make any difference to the durability of the epoxy.

    Timing issue

I must disagree. This engine is quite tolerant when it comes to valve to crown clearance. The valves are perpendicular to the piston crown which is flat so any crash is less likely to bend valves than in an engine where the valves are inclined. The rockers usually bend first. I have had BMC engines in the shop where the timing chain has jumped on the worn crank sprocket by several teeth and valve crash has not occurred. Occasionally this has happened to such a degree that the combustion has billowed out of the induction inlet on every firing stroke. If a pushrod is not located on the adjuster ball, the valve will not open hence no crash there either. But it will bend the pushrod.

Good point Tony. Does the OP know how to set the tappets by rule of 9? Its the easy way. If he has set them wrong there will be poor compression hence no start.

    Timing issue

Valves on the rock is when the inlet and the exhaust are both moving but in the opposite direction. Both will have no clearance then of course. So there is nothing wrong with the timing! Phew, glad to get that out of the way. Now if it has fuel, air and compression, spinning it over at a fair wack it will run. Is the stop control fully off? Is there fuel at the injector? Well charged battery?

4 rocking gives 1 at TDC on injection point, or should do. Its not logical that this engine has run and now it won't. The reason has to be something else.

    Timing issue

He says with valves on 4 rocking, when 1 will be at TDC, the marks are out by one crank rev so firing will not be on 1 but 4. It makes no sense if the motor has run like this, ever.
  10. If the key has 5 positions, (including off) then its probably this one https://www.vehiclewiringproducts.co.uk/c-59-switches/c-171-ignition-switches/p-204-diesel-start-switch-5-position If it has only 4 positions (including off) then its probably this one https://www.vehiclewiringproducts.co.uk/c-59-switches/c-171-ignition-switches/p-205-diesel-start-switch-4-position
  11. AFAIK they are a standard diesel ignition switch. You will find that 2 of the terminals go to the same contact.
  12. A stain blocker undercoat first than I would suggest a matt or low gloss top coat.
  13. There are a lot of draught excluders made with a "P" section.
  14. I knew that this would be posted, you beat me to it. Sadly now sold on, no idea where it is now or if the piano is still aboard. This was taken on its Middlewich mooring, a lovely old boat.
  15. True, but I thank Rich for all his attention and patience in keeping this site in good order.
  16. Thank you Rich, it was annoying loosing most of the first page. Cache will reset if you delete the tab that has the site on and reload "canalworld.net"

The engine will not run with the cam 180 out from the crank as the injection will be on the wrong cylinder..........Unless........ the injection pump drive gear is also mistimed. The pump is master splined so cannot be wrong if the gear has been put in correctly. How did it get like this?
  18. C&RT are going for the Booker Prize for fiction again? They must be in a parallel universe, little of what they say happens around where I go boating.
  19. If it is fouled up inside, the pressure switch chamber will be full of "gunk" too which will cause it to either not fill, overfill or not drain properly.
  20. Like everything else the price of boats is driven by availability and demand. Over a period of time they will always rise, everything does. There are peaks and troughs but to say that they have reached the peak is misleading. As less can afford houses or get mortgages there will be a demand for boats to live on. The folk with pleasure boats and restricted income may have to reign in there spending and sell the craft off. If selling and needing the cash they will be willing to reduce prices. But this is traditionally the season when prices dip, no point in the pleasure buyers buying in Autumn when they will not use it in Winter. With more boats being built and less being scrapped there is a rising availability of craft but not all across the market, top and bottom ends are inflated by demand.
  21. Agreed, give the old batteries a chance but be aware that a defective battery can overheat when charged hard and even burst throwing acid and hydrogen sulphide gas out. Keep an eye on them, if you get the bad eggs smell, its time to check them carefully. ( it is a poisonous gas )
