  1. I suspect it's to do with the motor's lack of back EMF on startup shifting the power factor so low that the inverter's 2kva rating isn't enough to maintain voltage, so the machine cuts out. Switching on a resistive load somehow smooths this enough to shift the power factor. Dout it's because 2kva not enough as dud the same on our 3kva Multiplus. Adding resistive load didn't do much either.

  3. As a student sharing a flat in Ilford in the mid 60s we had Fray Bentos pies often. Every time I saw them in the shop I mentioned it to my wife so she bought one last year. What a disappointment.

  11. We have several locks on the Great Ouse with with a D cutout to one side or layby. If we are going to share then I ask the GRPs to go into the D and I take the sidewall.

  13. Just had a look out old log book and in 18 hires from 1978 to 1996, 14 had breakdowns of one sort or another, mainly charging problems. In one I had to tell the engineer how a split charge relay should be wired. One boat from Coles Morton Marine in Wigan had 5 breakdowns, all but one down to poor maintenance. We did negotiate a refund of one days hire. And these were not cheap companies,
  14. In our first house we had a party line telephone which relied on an earth rod. We too had to pour water over it in dry weather to make a call. It wasn't until a few years later when our power failed that we found the rod had damaged to underground mains cable into the house.
