  1. You just messed up the theory of chances having transporters like in Star Trek Alan
  2. If the problem your experiencing suspected to do with spikes? If so, simply fit suppression - it won't hurt anything. Simple chockey's can be made with 8 - 10 coils of wire formed around a rod. Alan
  3. You can get digital multi-meters that read RMS, do tend to be a bit more expensive. Handheld battery service oscilloscopes are available from Maplins and RS, as there are converter adapters that will connect to a laptop. I ask why do you need RMS DC Voltage readout and seemingly need to look at the superimposed DC ripple wave form (true DC will not have a sign wave). If you exsplain what you want or need to achieve, we can perhaps better help you. As it is I fear you might be spending a fair few quid on kit you might use only a few times. Alan
  4. Just thinking over this issue, what if you attach the brackets to the frames, then brackets to roof using car wheel studs and locking wheel nuts? Alan
  5. Just some safety advice, do not disconnect bateries during or shortly after charging, as said earlier hydrogen gas is released. if in a confined space especially, the gas can explode violently spraying, ignited by a small spark, sulphuric acide and battery parts over you. Always best to at least wear safety glasses or better the type of face protectors used with strimmers, to protect your eye's - hard to pilot a boat using brail! My cheap as chips SOLAR 30 controller reports charging @ 14.3 with engine running, in fact it regulates the battery charging voltage. I don't have your make of inverter but my 2k rated inverter runs it's fan intermittently dependent on the load being drawn from it. Alan
  6. I'f suggest to use 'rain off' or simular products to stop the streaking from calcium deposits and algae. Alan
  7. We had a Welsh Border Collie who would chase polo mints, lick them up, spit them out and seemingly try 'putting them out' with her hind paws. We also had a dotty rotty, given a squeaky toy by our next door neighbour. She simply could not bare to part with it. To the point of instead of chasing cats or squirrels barking threatenningly, she squeaked due to toy in her mouth. Then on return scrape her paws in 'victory'. Funniest dog i ever had, and still miss badly after 10 years Alan
  8. Hi all, Recently there has been a lot of coverage of these often high powered laser items shone at aircraft, trains even emergency services drivers by idiots. Well i'm wired a bit differently to most, connecting often unrelated situations together to solve problems. given the current weather and open doors/windows and in often a vain attempt to swat annoying house fly/s. Given flies have iirc hundreds of eyes - and no i eyelids ?, suddenly i thought if i got a military grade laser pointer could i dazzle the feindish fly and making it easier to swat or crash? So, anyone tried it? Alan
  9. A work pal of mine when in my teens had a received a very expensive watch from his girlfriend as an engagement present, but he came looking very glum, on a Monday morning instead of his normally bright happy self. When i spoke to him - be blammed me??? Aparently he was working on his car and to protect this watch he decided to place it under the back wheel 'as the safest place' while it was up on ramps, as nothing could fall on it. Puzzled i said so what can be my fault? He decided to check the timing, he had a Morris 1000 rag top, me being ex-BMC garage background we had discussed how to. i suggested removing plugs, engaging gear and the pushing car back to align the timing marks, which he did - forgetting and crushing the precious watch! Ooops! Alan
  10. Similar task, my cooker snd water heater are already installed and are isolated by a single cock. Our fridge was located under the captains chair made out if a kitchen cabinet that had been modified (just don't ask ?) fed from a separate bottle, located in a cage off the stern, 'arrangement' i wanted to change. Over this period i had the boat safety certificate renewed, we mentioned our intent to move fridge and asked for advice. Inspecter insisted on a cock was needed to isolate the fridge from the heater and the cooker, we are not talking much legnth in pipe, seemed to me a bit ott. from the cock on the top of the bottle, its about a meter to across a wardrobe to another cock, that then feeds a 'T', one side to cooker, other to the water heater. I could not see why i needed this further cock to isolate the fridge on such a small pipe network. I installed it to save an elongated discussion, just i do like to know the logic or reason behind anything do, because i beleive if you know this, you more likely to put more into achieving it ? BTW, maximum flexible pipe legnth (i eas told)is 1 meter.. Alan
  11. Problem with fixed bars is not only the look but escaping in a fire situation. You could use 15mm copper water pipe held in place with pipe clips or kerry springe clips. Now position micro switches held in by the bars, or use surface contacts and hot melt their magnets inside the new bars. Any felone will dislodge the bars setting off a sounder as fhe attempt to enter. Alan
  12. But not their 'aft end', their bodily functions can be close to a bio hazard! A freind of mine had one that if anyone sat on his comfy chair, could clear the room on demand - phewee! Alan
  13. Apparently and eeirdly coincidentally, the same style of lock is used at Henly on Thames - as seen by the wife while out with extended family today. Two guys were operating it using a remote control consul, she spoke to them saying we use locks on the Lea, they were surprised manual locks were still in use. Wife don't read any of the boating forums, and why i say weirdly. thread is running at the time she visits an area with a near same lock we are talking about - given we live in Essex ? Alan
  14. I've only tamely day boated on the River Lea @ Stanstead Abbots so far, but hopefully intend to go further, summer permitting, later this year. So far i've used a single 120 AH leisure battery and a solar trickle charger'. if we do get more adventurous i had it in mind to run a second battery likely via a relay or split charger caravan style. You mention nav lights, which i think are not needed unless underway, engine is running and not a power issue, but what about the 'at anchor' white lights which may be needed to be on overnight, and the bilge pump? Couple of years back i had a 1st ever BSC examination, we did not bother wiring the nav lights up being intended as canal day boat only, he said at busy times we may be delayed past our planned time of return, so as the lights were inplace he insisted they actually worked - but the said i could simply remve them and he woukd issue the certificate ?. Alan
  15. Hi tagablue, I to offer my sincere condolences, obviously feelings are very raw being so recent. I'm not widowed but over the years i have lost both perants and close freinds. I can't offer a magic way to stop the grief, it is part of life but i find i can lessen it when i'm blue, thinking of the the many good and or helarious times i had with all of them.. If you like It's kind of my way of paying homage to them. Alan
  16. One hope they might have is many Police Cars are fitted with ANPR, and there are nany fixed ANPR cameras that in itself might ping up a fake plate as untaxed etc. so fingers crossed. Alan
  17. Hi Jaymi, Do no be scarred to ask for fear of being a nuisance or being seen as daft - because we ALL are, being do is my specialist subject . Photos often help to exspain what perhaps you can't, a time will come when you jump into help from what you have learn't, and that in it's self becomes very enjoyable. But if your worried, most Boat Safety Scheme inspectors do, or have worked extensively with boats. a list of examiners can be got from the BSS site. Likely if they don't do what you actually need they will know who can and will. Alan
  18. Your more than welcome, as a security system engineer running my own firm for 30 years, ehile i can not guarentee any intruders reaction my general advice if you were to be aware of an intruder is to play being asleep. Nothing is worth being damaged for, physical attack is relatively rare. If confronted do not block their escape path, it is likely forcing them to react by going through you, it will raise the risk that you will end up getting badly hurt. If anything tell whoever they can leave and move aside to allow it. You have to remmember the intruders adrenalin level will already be very high, making even a weakling much stronger than they normally and they will be 'up' to react. You will likely be in a state of surprise and a level of disbeleif and then shock that someone would even dare to enter your 'castle' uninvited. You can use tin cans tied together and attached to a thin cotton, placed across a eindow or doorways, where catching it will cause the cans to fall from a chair or table. Alan
  19. For those living alone, don't forget the simple battery alarms you can fit to windows or doors. You can buy them from the DIY sheds or ebay. Those gas powered attack shriekers are worth having, as well as a decent football whistle. In general, Intruders don't like light or noise, a powerful 5 watt LED torche shone directly at an intruders face can surprise, blind and disorientate them, maybe even enough to fall in the water. I often thought as a passive defensive tool, to have the torche flash at a high rate like a strobe, would be very effective. Alan
  20. Back in the day j had a BMC mini, while teaching the then girlfreind (now wife) to drive, if a large lorry came up behind she was do fearful they could not see this little car we often ended up driving along the pavement. I sold yhe mini and bought a thames trader camper, though still not as big as a truck it showed small cars can be seen. She has become one of the best drivers i know bar none including me, but she is reluctant to pilot our cruiser. After 45 years, I'm of the veiw she will do so at her own pace, placing pressure on her will only cause arguments and then risk her withdrawing completely from boating. and that would never do, as we do most everything together so i'd have to sell it up. - and do decorating! Alan
  21. I recently bought the SOLAR 30 regulator -: 30A 12V/24V Solar Controller Regulator Charge Battery Protection CE J Trickle charges my 120 AH leisure/starter battery. I have ben using to run my 2k inverter for saws and drills etc for refurbishing. Very satisfied at therecovery so far using i think a 120 watt dual PV hinged panel. £16:70. Very satisfied so far, displays battery voltage on / off charge, and PV panel voltage on LCD display meter, you can use it to switch off the output and only charge, or isolate PV panel., should you suspect any smoke i have mounted the controller on the helm dash so i can quickly isolate. It's a weekender cruiser and works fine for our needs. Alan
