  1. I have a J2 with a similar starter motor. The sticker on it points to https://www.startermotorsalternators.com/ You can have a pre-heater fitted to the top of the inlet, koukouvagia fitted one on my engine for the previous owner. I've never used it and I think it's burnt out, but the theory is sound.
  2. As per my original idea, I've fitted a couple of small o-rings to provide a seal. I'll keep an eye on the fluid levels in the lower part of the pump and seek help soon.
  3. I once asked Keith Duffy what he'd put in a boat if he was building a new one, from a maintenance/reliability POV. He voted Beta.
  4. Not quite, the actual definition of affordable housing is taking no more than 30% of salary. So for the national average salary of £31k, this should be c£600pm. Obviously there are regional variations, but for central London, it's about that. (Rich people tend not to live right in the centre).
  5. Time to throw my hat in the ring. We have a CC boat and a baby (we had the boat first). Thus far, we've had a great time moving every 14 days to a new place. OK, the early days were tough; winter, a newborn and no sleep is not easy. But we've persevered and it's coming together now. I am slightly worried about what happens in 4 years when we need to think about schooling, although TBH, we could still move every 14 days and get the boy to school. There's a suitable, boater friendly, school that we have our eye on. The bit that might be problematic would be the "cruising range" "guideline" that CRT have decided to implement. Yes, I know it's in the T&C, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a unilateral condition that there is no actual legal justification for. What's to stop them from changing it to 30 or 50 miles in the future? That would effectively force us and lots of our friends off the cut, as there's no way we could comply and keep working. Before you say it, there are no affordable moorings in London; none. For all those of you curmudgeons saying "follow the rules", WE DO! But the rules keep changing and it does feel like a dedicated assault on our chosen lifestyle. If the DVLA decided that to own a car you had to have an annual driving range of 300 miles, there'd be a massive ****ing outcry against it. There'd also be smug commenters saying, "That's the rules, you chose to have a car, you have to fulfill the range".
  6. As the lady who organized this petition is due to give evidence in the House of Lords soon, I'm fairly confidant that she's got most bases covered.
  7. I do, but not a digital one. I'll get hold of it for you. So ignore it. Just don't whinge "Why have they done this?" the next time you do the GU south of Rickmansworth. Edit: Found a nice clear visual of the plans: http://www.colnevalleypark.org.uk/sites/default/files/HS2ThroughColneValleyMap.pdf And the website it's published on: http://www.colnevalleypark.org.uk/about/hs2-effect-colne-valley
  8. Not quite History and Heritage, but today's events are the future's past. HS2 is planned to emerge near the Colne Valley Nature Reserve, straddling the GU. There are protests active to get the tunnelling extended to protect this green space inside the M25. The planned line not only bisects the Reserve, but the construction works will decimate the ecology of the local area. Massive swathes of green land are earmarked for industrial development to service the building of the line, with a large new power substation as well. Please sign the petition at https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/save-the-colne-valley-nature-reserves-west-london-from-hs2
  9. Whilst on holiday, I found somewhere that doesn't like all this new-fangled creative industry.
  10. I've bought both mine from AD, and sold one on there too. It sold in less than a week. I'd rather look on there, where I can filter down to what I want, than eBay.
  11. Does depend on how big you are, obviously. Last time we went through (there and back again), we never had to double moor, although someone did tie up alongside us for a week. But that was in the 38-footer. I think that next time it'll be more challenging.
  12. We were very tempted by Helvetia when we were looking. It's a nice boat. I agree that the AD experience is a bit confusing. I'm computer literate and it took me a few goes to get the ad for our old boat looking good. But you can't argue with the price and exposure. Good luck with the sale, and don't forget to change it to SOLD when everything is complete.
  13. Ah, right. I check the oil level in the injector pump every time I start the engine using the dipstick 60/61. Generally it is good. Occasionally I add a squirt, but it's never been too full.
  14. Excellent. Thank you.
  15. Nope. All the fuel is running down the outside of the injector pump. I have a drip tray on the floor to catch it. There seems to be very little going elsewhere. Where does the camshaft in a Kelvin sit? I haven't been able to find any decent diagrams. The skynet site is great, but I'm a visual guy and prefer drawings.
  16. It runs ok. Less smokey now that I've changed the oil. I had a look at the engine last night, and screw 14 does look right. There's no washer on the outside though. I'm assuming that the locking cap is inside.
  17. I've tightened them as far as I can. I was thinking maybe a small o-ring to seal it?
  18. OK, after some Google-fu, I know it's a CAV BPE. Still can't find any location for spare nuts / screws / washers though.
  19. I changed the fuel filter last weekend. Not a massive problem, except that bleeding the injector pump was a bit of a b****h. And I now have a bit of a diesel leak. It seems to be coming from the small screws below the bleed nuts (pictured in red). Said bleed nuts could also do with replacing, as the have been a bit chewed up previously. Does anyone know where I can get parts for this, or even what the injector is? The name plate is a bit eroded (also pictured).
  20. You got a linky for that part as well? Ours needs replacing.
  21. I'll be there. Moving down the last stretch on Weds evening.
  22. Good grief, no! They'd go for the low hanging fruit, not the ones that need picking.
  23. I emailed Fran Read, to ask how many responses they had to the survey. I think it's an important part of evaluating the validity of the data. 1024 responses. I think that's too small a sample to be making the inferences that they are. It'd be truer to state that "645 boaters said that they trust the charity to look after the waterways, 378 didn't, and the other 9000 didn't reply."
  24. That would depend on how many of the 10k surveys were returned. If they only got 4k replies, then ~2.5k out of 10K trust CRT to do their job, with ~1.5k not trusting and the other 6k unknown.
