  1. Great to see you back @mrsmelly and wishing you a steady recovery
  2. Just to update that this engine has now gone to a new home. Was taken out a couple of weeks ago at crane-in. Quite impressive to see it dangling in the air.
  3. Welcome to the forum Chris. I'm assuming that you were looking at the thread below from some years ago, and sure that a lot us would like to hear more about boatbuilding back then.
  4. If not burning it entirely you can get the tiger skin effect which looks good. Shou Sugi Ban (the scorching process) helps to preserve the wood in itself. I've put linseed oil on stuff after doing it but lacquer or varnish according to taste I'm sure do as good a job.
  5. I made my own from a 10' straight ash branch. Ripped off the bark with a drawknife, left it to season for about 2 years and then gave it raw linseed oil every day for a week, every week for a month and then every month for the rest of the year. As said above the rags need to be disposed of safely, burn them in a steel bin outside. Reason is that if left in piles they can spontaneously combust.
  6. Isn't it just. Would love a boat like that. Would have to have a course in Kelvin starting though.
  7. I once got to my dad's boat and had forgotten the keys. Not many people in the marina knew me. Spare keys inside so thought it was easier/cheaper to break the padlock on back door. No one challenged me and I cruised a few miles up the cut for a couple of days.
  8. This is Peel holdings we are talking about. They made their money by quarrying out big holes for road materials, filling them in with paid landfill and then building on top. I think that now they may well look at it as their possession of a linear piece of land. They've seen The Line in Saudi and are trying to come up with ways to develop a mini-version. I sincerely hope not but there don't seem to be any fully backed commitments to re-open navigation.
  9. Knowing CaRT, they'd end up section 8 ing 30,000 boats that can't be licensed due to there being no scheme any more.
  10. I call my examiner 'guy' because Guy is his name I forget which but there is a Tony Harrison (modern northern poet) line where he writes that when he was mentioned in the broadsheet paper as he became recognised for his work, they changed his name to Anthony. Two chaps I know, best mates with each other, one called Ant, the other Tony.
  11. Yes, it's a good place. The steam party traction engines and BBQ there have been great over the years and the club itself welcoming to non-members.
  12. The Soldier Dick has been closed for some time now, over a year. It was another pub that I used to like. Goyt was always nice but haven't been in for a few years.
  13. That's very sad. Had many a good night in there over the years.
  14. I've bought loads of GRP resin and MEKP catalyst online over the years for boat stuff. It gets delivered by courier with no safety instructions, yet the catalyst was the reason for the liquid ban on planes years ago. It is f'in dangerous in the wrong quantities.
  15. As a kid we were in the three day week, power cuts etc. To be honest, really enjoyed candlelight meals cooked on a Primus after playing out on the street. It was always better in the old days, you know, when rickets was a thing, cholera was a taboo subject and polio was scary.
  16. Any one here could go to ToolStation/Screwfix and buy gas fittings, a boiler, 240v domestic sockets etc etc. Doesn't mean that we're competent to install them.
  17. Try it again. Working for me on laptop and I'm not logged into my account on that site.
  18. Bought a new car starter battery last month and it came with a piece of paper on the top telling you to take it outside to unpack and remove the bungs, immediately upon delivery. Sticker on the battery itself too.
  19. Can I also point out that it is patrons like yourself who make this site possible. Plenty of us don't contribute financially and are grateful to people who do and keep the forum free from junk adverts. Also, something will always be new to a boater regardless of how long they've had a boat. Have been messing with them for forty odd years and every time I learn something new, I realise there are two other things I now realise I don't know/understand.
  20. Please add me to the list of people sending their best wishes. Never met in real life but Tim's presence here is definitely missed.
  21. Nice boats Nauticus, but like so many cruisers of the era a lot have the Enfield outdrive, and they are getting old now. I know of people who have had major headaches with them when they've needed an engineer to fix them.
  22. Only just seen this, not received a message from CaRT as moored a good distance away on upper Macc. Been on Peak/Macc since the 80s and can't remember them suffering so many failures as they have in the past few years (although do agree with Arthur that the bridges have always been a pain for breaking). Probably a lot of the rest of the system is in a similar state but just that I notice the local places I know.
