  2. ebay ? The headgasket can go either way, and mix the oil with the water, or in your case, when the engine is worked harder the exhaust gases are pressurising the system causing the boil over, i had it on a old diesel VW, id just leave the tank cap loose so it couldnt pressurise and kept on toppign up the water when cold, lasted 4 month before the MOT ran out and i scrapped it.
  3. Ive done cars before, 2 man job, heatgun and magnets a must. Boat would be fairly easy with straight panels aslong as the surface was clean and smooth to adhere to.
  4. Theres that Dan Brown on youtube, but most the time hes just banging on about nothing and needs to get laid.
  5. Aye seen that on TV on cant pay we will take it away, someone thinks theyve got 2 months, so stays, landlord issues court proceedings, court tells them you could be there for 6 months, council we cant help you till youve been officially booted out, so the tenant thinks welll ive got 6 months time, then 2 weeks later high court turn up to repossess the property there and then. Its just ive always had a good record with renting, 14 years to be exact, never missed a payment, never had a bad word said about me, i just wouldnt want to tarnish that now, plus ive got a £850 bond tied up in this place too. I know it isnt all glamourous living, where i live now i have to hump my rubbish and shopping up and down 6 flights of stairs, and whatever I buy will probs be max 40ft so i can get used to it, im quite an anxious person and one thing I loved about being on trips and on friends boats was just the odd feeling of feeling free, like i had no worries, surrounded by nature, just that tranqulity, no worries, nothing to fret about, at the minute paying out £600+ a month for this place, i get £225 housing benefit because im under 35 so as you can imagine this place eats into my other ESA benefit and DLA I get, which i dont do too bad out of its the equivalant of a min wage job i get per month. Im very particular and that so whatever I get will be well maintained
  6. Thanks mate, I guess any brokerage is going to have a slightly inflated price. My cousins came from a brokerage and she got the price down from £27500 to £24500 and there wasnt much wrong with it other than it needed blacking. Ive heard scary stories about surveyors, some are sound, some will lie to you, some make things out to be far worse than they are. i have one of these meters that checks paint depth and metal thickness depth from when i used to work in the car repair trade somewhere that I never parted with as it cost me around £170. Is there a list if recommended surveyors anywhere? What would a survey on a small boat like that cost? thanks again
  7. Aha lol, I wont tie myself down again mate the last one messed me up for a good few years, been single 7 year now, dont feel the need to have someone thats a constant burden on me, granted not all women are the same but the good ones are few and far between. Just seen a springer on whilton marina's website, are they any good? needs some slight interior adjustments and lick of paint, new toilet etc, i like how the bed goes across, from when i slept on my friends having the bed like that is somewhat relaxing I found as you are rocked head to toe as opposed to side to side where the bed is set so u can walk down the side of it. http://www.whiltonmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/details/3454.aspx Then this one, but the layouts a bit odd, bed, then the fire, kitchen area bathroom then the living area is boarded off from the rest of the boat. http://www.whiltonmarina.co.uk/used-narrowboats/details/3463.aspx From what a friend told me springers were made from old gas geysers? hence theyre not very thick steel wise in the first place, but apparently last well.
  8. Indeed, I will have 2 months to move out/find somewhere once they officially announce it. I do love the outdoors, especially in winter, i stayed on my friends a couple of winters ago, that was around late November time, i do recall going backside over breast (trying to be polite here lol) but the towpaths seem to be worse wherever there are more cyclists, or where the canals are near where they have built warehouses. I just see myself as a single person, with no ties, no baggage and minimal posessions, i honestly do think il love it, im one of those who doesnt take life too seriously, anything goes, whatever wil be will be types. Ill keep looking and will post up anything i find that interests me. Thanks people
  9. One of my friends who lives a fair trek from me knows someone in the marina next to him who has this 1980s boat and has had it for nearly 10 years, apparently hes spent over £30k on what was a £5k boat that just needed slight replating. There isnt a straight panel on it outside, its about 15 different colours, despite having it plated its nearly sank about 3 times, the interior is typical 80s dark wood and it just looks like a dossers boat. Where 30k has gone i dont know, hes one of those guys who never has any money, lives in squalor but the moment he has money he says he will finish it, paint it, and it never happens, but hes always wearing the latest fashion and has the latest gadgets, I can never work people out like that.
  10. I have a friend and a cousin who live on the canals, albeit a good 2/3 hours away from me so dont see them a lot, and me and a group of friends hired one 2 summers ago for 10 days which was a laugh, so being on the canal and boats are not alien to me, its just trying to find the right one within my price range. I did look at the GRP cruisers but many dont have heating as said thats the only downside to them.
  11. Im near Braunston mate, so would be on the canals around that area
  12. Ive found out the other day theyre selling the apartments off I live in. As I am out of work due to health issues (nothing that severely would affect me on a boat, i am still fairly young and fairly fit and capable) its not going to be easy for me to find another 1 bedroom apartment, whilst out of work, and finding someone who will accept housing benefit is another thing because whether your out of work through no fault of your own or you just bone idle you all fall into the same category of scum with landlords these days I am single and have no children, i have some inheritance money put aside, and I am looking to sell my car I rarely use which is worth around £5000 - £6000. Ive been looking on gumtree, ebay for something around the 15-20k mark probably closer to the 15k mark, okay I know its going to be no show boat, but I am mechanically minded, i am one of those that family and friends turn to because i seem to be able to repair anything, often using ingenuity quite a lot of the time, I dont want a massive boat, something 35-40 feet, I have never liked living in big houses, aslong as i can walk down it, have a bed, a bathroom, small kitchen area and a small living area I would be content, I am a very minimalistic person, i dont want a lot in life, ive been through a lot of crap and i am just happy now if i can get by and live comfortably, and the possessions I own aside from furniture would fit into a medium sized car. Iam hoping to find something that mainly isnt rotten or will need overplating, aslong as the engine runs without overheating or anything I can live with that, and im not too fussed about interior as i have a friend who is a carpenter who has already said he would love to experience working on a boat so if needs be I have him. I just really cannot be bothered to pay another £600 out on a bond, another £400 - £500 month up front on rent to move in, plus admin fees, on a home I will never own, I am also fedup of facing homelessness constantly, 3 times in the last 6 years i have had to move because of moron landlords or moron neighbors, i just feel the need to be free, and be able to move at my own leisure in a home i can call my own that nobody can take off me or kick me out of.
  13. find it sad some people just spend their lives getting pissed living on the canal in boats that look like theyre ready to sink annoying and upsetting everyone else living by the rules.
  14. I read the initial post too fast and thought you said we have a macerator toilet fitted to our boat Odourlos.. funny name for a boat LOL
  15. I swear every thread on here turns into a self opinionated whos right whos wrong slanging match! moderation is great here, shout, shout, let it all out..
  16. Why do so many people end up dumped in canals, rapes, muggings, anything dark seems to end near a canal lol Anyone young enough to know the song called Suzanne by Plan B ? It was about the Camden ripper who killed a woman called Suzanne cut her up with a chainsaw and dumped her in a canal by Camden town....
  17. Ive been trawling eBay, apolloduck, gumtree for past year or so since i decided I wanted to live on one for various reasons. I too was hoping to spend around 15k on my first one, at 32 years of age it wasnt goin to be something id spend the rest of my life on, it was really a way of getting into the lifestyle, where then if i felt there was no going back to bricks and cement id do up said 15k boat maybe make a bit of money on it sell it and buy something else. As others have said, for 15k, its hard to find something worthwhile, more so because there is 2 of you and wanting adequate space, where a 15k boat would work for me is iam a single guy with no women or kids, also most boats in the 15k price range tend to be all between 30 feet and 45 feet with the odd 50 foot wreck popping up now and again. Ive seen many a springer, and a few others for 12.5-15k in tidy exterior condition, with sound hull, recent survey, long safety certificate but the interior resembles an old garden shed, miserable dark wood, something in a confined space would make the happiest person depressed i feel, but ive been lead to believe you can either paint it white, or nail thin ply over the top of that and then paint that white. I too am mechanically/engineering minded so id have no issues with engine work, or anything that keeps it moving, charges the batteries, and keeps it floating, my downfall is i know nothing about decorating, plumbing, woodwork, electrics etc but i feel being mechanically etc minded is the better of the two. What im trying to say is if your not mechanically minded and are going to take a gamble on a older boat in this price range then it would be wise to have another few grand put aside for if and when things do go wrong if you cant fix them yourself
  18. I cant wait to get on one. People try scare you off it for many reasons, but for me, id rather pay 20 grand odd for a never ending adventure of many subjects, than live in bricks and mortar and pay a mortgage till im about dead. Ive got mental health issues, psyhical issues, yet keeping active helps me, i have an overactive mind, im brilliant with engines, mechanicals, electricals, i can fix anything, so yeah, what you just described sounds like fun to me lol
  19. Ill get the index number off it next time if people want it? Its on the towpath side, its a 1970s springer
  20. This thing is somehow still floating. Its a right wreck, it need scrapping, theyve plugged the main holes only just above the waterline with pieces of rag, then used blocks of concrete on the water side to try and keep the boat level as if the side the concrete block is on lifts up itl submerge the rags and holes on the towpath side and itl sink again Its a wooden top, which is either rotten or really warped and split, windows are soaked with condensation inside so its very wet in there, wont be long before someone torches it, it looks abandoned but apparently a couple own it, i think its past saving personally.
  21. Hi all, just looking for some advice here. I am currently in receipt of housing benefit for my private rented 1 bedroom house, and also recieve Employment and Support Allowance and Independence Payment as Iam unable to work due to an ongoing health issue (nothing that effects my fitness or ability to get about and do boat related tasks, but being active is a great help to me and ive been helping out on a friends boat and getting used to things and should be buying my first boat before the end of summer. I just want to know what happens with my benefits. My independence payment I believe that doesnt matter as im guaranteed that for five years, its just the ESA and housing benefit I get. Im planning to stay on the canal which covers the area of my local authority, but wasnt planning on staying in a mooring unless I had to. Can I tell the council about this and continue to claim housing benefit to cover the cost of my licence? With my ESA can I carry on claiming this if i dont have a fixed address? Just not sure how benefits work with living on a boat thats all. Thanks
  22. Ive noticed this naff idea on a lot of new boats, just as hard trying to find an older boat with reverse layout
  23. It just needs draining, refilling with fresh oil and running up, once its ran for a bit drop the oil and put fresh in. Id also put fresh diesel in it.
  24. Rare result but refreshing to hear all the same
