  1. That should be in Wales. It's a placename containing a female sheep and too many L's. A couple of extra Y's would help but are not obligatory ...
  2. You are the one that goes visiting in rubber suits!

  4. Unpowered portables up to 5m (16 feet) are £51.02 this year with prompt payment. You need to pay the £20 to register them first. By contrast, BCU membership (allowing you to use any canoe but not lend them to other people) is £45 for an adult this year, less for young people. Membership also includes third party insurance when on the water. Note that CRT allow one tender up to 3m included in the "big boat" licence, but subject to extra T&C's. The butty discount only applies to vessels over 55ft. Hope this helps.
  5. Yes, and the CRT canoe licence is for a specific boat which may then be kept on the water, unlike the BCU agreement licence which covers any boat as long as the BCU member is in the boat at the time.

  7. The bit I don't know about is the detail of the contract - it could have either been needed to allow the canal to reopen or the University are paying ££££ to CRT for water extraction and release or a bit of each. Don't forget that CRT make significantly more money out of water rights than they do boats ... it may have been an excellent commercial decision and well worth paying staff to do daily water management, even if it inconveniences the three boats a month that actually use the Hudd.

  9. He might not be lying to you, just mistaken. The outfall goes into Aspley Goit, the small stream / outfall that runs down to the river. That is flagged on CRT's reference map as being CRT managed, so as far as the university are concerned they take CRT water out and then return it later, warmer. Whoever signed the deal that allows them to take it from above Lock 1E and discharge it below the level of the Huddersfield Broad canal at Aspley need slapping though!
  10. Except it isn't returned to the canal. The outfall is the other side of the university and goes into the River Colne. This is sensible design for a cooling system, but doesn't help much with keeping the pound between 1E and 2E full. You can see both the intake and the outfall if you stand in the correct places. The primary intake is a few yards past lock 1E. I do agree that it's all eco and green and a good cooling system - but it would be a better one if there were remote controlled sluices at the next 5 locks so CRT didn't have to send three blokes in a van every morning to sort out the water levels. Hardly anything - there is a very low delta-T (change in temperature) between the "cold" and "hot" water, which is why they use 4 million litres a day. If they just kept recirculating it into the canal as suggested above, you would eventually notice quite a few degrees of temperature increase.

  12. Yes for inert debris, but there was another grenade pulled out at Leigh last week. Since magnet fishing became a craze recently, there have been a lot of explosives pulled out around the country. Bomb disposal are quite concerned that one of these is going to go off when it's disturbed.
  13. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/safety-on-our-waterways/water-safety-and-magnet-fishing Water safety and magnet fishing Our waterways are enjoyed by thousands of people everyday. And many of you take an interest in the weird and wonderful items that sometimes find their way to the bottom of the canal. Removing these items from the canal bed however, can be dangerous without the appropriate support. It’s great that people are interested in getting rubbish out of the canal, however we don't allow magnet fishing as it can be extremely dangerous. Items dragged out by magnets could be sharp or heavy and cause you to be dragged into the water. We’ve even had reports of people fishing out old war bombs and dumped weapons. When people leave piles of metal on the towpath it can cause problems for other visitors, for example families with young children.
  14. No, it's just forbidden by CRT because people keep finding unexploded bombs!
  15. Glad you found the problem, but you will have probably damaged your impeller by doing that. Get a new one and a spare before you need them. I would check the one that's in the pump before running your engine anymore. That's also why I changed the screwtap for a lever valve on my old boat. You could see at a glance if it was open or closed.

  17. Not yet, but I am going to. I will make sure I put the bolts back in this time though!
  18. I have a theory that every boat has a "correct" speed for any given tunnel. It just seems like the boat in front has a slower speed than mine, and smokes more!
  19. When I said modern engine, I was thinking at least an Isuzu, maybe a Beta! All this blowlamp nonsense is why the kids don't care - they want to be able to start it via an app on their phones!
