  4. Was Raymond not built from secondhand ironwork originally therefore in theory Raymond is not its real name??

  7. There was a fair gap at the winding hole and I turned a 60ft round there without a hint of a problem. I am sure you could have turned a 70ft fairly easily. It is always fairly tight everywhere when rallys etc are on.
  8. Hector was originally a GUCC boat hence the name Hector even though it was a butty, there were I think a few GUCC boats bought by A Wander.
  9. yes that would have been me that sent them or somebody I sent them to forwarded them to you as I have that photo or actually several photo's. that was at Crick where the garden centre is now near the marina. they were cut in half in the water the winched out on the side. I ended up finding out what happened to both boats in the end unfortunately both are now deceased. We do have a couple of bits of Lysander still though.
  10. My Grandad owned bought Hector in late 1958 from Braunston before it was burnt and scrapped, then cut it in half at Crick to make 2 pleasure boats, becoming Hector and Lysander he owned Lysander till around the early seventies, Lysander was section 8'ed and broken up at Tarleton in 2002, Hector was section 8'ed and broken up at Uxbridge in 2000.

    Big Ricky

Yep, thats what I reckon as well, it certainly was earlier in the year anyway.
  12. He broke in by breaking one of our windows a few years ago, almost certainly was him as he has a specific way of breaking them. he will get no sympathy from me when I catch him. Apparently he is fond of wine and batteries but there were none of these on ours when he broke in. He also breaks in through hatches as well and has been known to target boats again and again, he also likes to get caught around christmas time as it gets cold and he gets a nice warm bed over winter.
  13. I race RC Cars and use a Sanwa radio with 2.4ghz spektrum module&receiver, eliminates interference and glitches. Best move I ever made and you can get modules for most of the more expensive radios. If anything should go wrong it also shuts itself down to a preset safe condition.
  14. The pulley size must surely make a difference as well, as you want to see engine speed not alternator speed?
  15. I would be interested to know if it would work on an intermittent basis as well as we have no shore power and only run the engine every couple of weeks or so and when cruising.
  16. That has been there over a year now, one by Welton side of Braunston tunnel recently.
  17. Yeah I agree Gary, just looking at a cheaper way of doing things with a bit of scrapheap challenge style engineering instead of buying a kit of expensive bits as this isn't a new boat. (and that doesn't mean it will be a bodge. LOL) Yeah my dad put paid to the radio control on the same basis as probably the HSE would. But on the other hand what happens if the control box goes wrong on the system below? Radio control units are exceptionally reliable and when used on 2.4ghz spectrum channels do not suffer any interference or possibility of somebody else being on the same channel, Also they reset themselves to a known safety point if there was ever a problem between the transmitter and receiver.
  18. Have looked into the vetus gear you can buy and it ends up very expensive. I wanted to go for radio control but my dad seemed a bit cautious of the idea.
  19. My dad is fitting a steering wheel in the front cockpit of his narrowboat over this winter as an alternative to standing on the back when it rains. I know he has lots of plans and ideas, I will let you know how he progress's and how well it works. Looking forward to the reaction of people he passes with apparently nobody at the controls.
  20. We bought a secondhand dish off ebay for about £10 a few years ago, use our sky box from home. just use the nicholsons guide to find south east then move slowly around that area while using the on screen signal detector. Find the satelite everytime within a couple of minutes now, then move slightly for the best signal. We find no need for a finder or compass.
  21. Hi there, we are leaving Weedon in the morning for our trip to Anderton, going up the GU,Oxford,Trent&Mersey then back down the Shropshire union, oxford,GU. so give us a wave if you see us.
  22. I have also been told that since the museum moorings were known to have a 24 hour presence on boats the public mooring side has become a safer mooring at night.
  23. I think most would be surprised (apart from Carl) how much work is involved in just keeping a wooden boat let alone restoring it, both lilith and forget me not are WCBS boats and have had much work done on them over the years by the WCBS, they may not be fancy looking but they are sound boats. I think Chris and the WCBS are looking after approx 5 at the basin which would have been scrapped long ago. and if you speak to him he has done work/helped out on a huge proportion of the wooden boats left on the system. He also spends a lot of time finding new owners for abandoned wooden boats around the system.Perhaps he could have put all his effort into 1 fancy wooden boat and ignored all the others but to me that would be a much greater crime. I think the moorings you talk about are owned by the museum not BW, therefore they are private moorings and they are only accesible inside a locked gated compound at the back of the museum.
  24. Get the train to Long Buckby its yards from the Grand Union.
