  4. It all depends on your oven etc. but I wouldn't worry. When doing a hog roast there are 2 x 3ft gas burners and we normally do about 12 hours on a 13kg cylinder so a domestic oven will use a lot less.

  6. We had some bricks from one we dismantled. I doubt they absorb water as we use two of them together (as they are a slight U shape) as a waterfall for the pond and they haven't cracked over the winter when frozen which i'd imagine they would do if they absorb water.
  7. One of the Chesterfield Canal Trust trip boats the Hugh Henshall has the Beta Marine hybrid onboard. It can feel slightly strange cruising along almost silently.
  8. It never ceases to amaze me how much work the WRGies do. Hats off to them!
  9. I was about to say that when it comes to drinking and boating common sense should come into play but then I remembered that common sense should now be considered a super power!
  10. A few years ago I was part of a single sex group on a hire boat on the broads. You do get people giving you a certain look when you moor near their very expensive cruiser which I can understand. However the slightly dissapointing part was that at no point were we rowdy. Of the 7 people aboard one owns their own narrow boat and 3 others have some boating experience. Yes we did drink but not to a point of loutish drunkeness. I know it may be the exception to the rule but would it be fair to ban single sex parties because of the bad examples? More importantly i'm in the without water camp.
  11. Ok so this is a bit of a random question but which brand gas cylinder do you use? Calor, Flogas, Energas or another and why is it price, availability or another reason?
  12. If you get to Muskham and fancy a walk I can recommend the Plough in Norwell. It's a decent walk but the food and beer is excellent. About as far from Cromwell as well. Edited to add its probably a bit late now anyway!
  13. Looking at the sign I can't help but wonder what a pivate property is.

  16. I have never built a slipway but I used to tow a twin axle trailer with a climbing wall attached that came in at just under 3000kg. If you go down the hardcore route then you need to make sure you have enough space for the trailer to hit it bang on straight otherwise a tight turn with a twin axle will just chew it up. I know straight is the ideal but in the real world some turning on the slip may be needed. If it's just for one event could you look at some sort of scaffold structure?
  17. One has been fished from the Chesterfield this year and another sighted. They are in the Trent so quite possible they will spread to several waterways.
  18. I was a member of the fishing club that had the fishing rights that are on the side of the VM's (this may have changed) I didn't renew my membership with them. I met some of their bailiffs during this time. Some were good some were far from it. I am a club bailiff on the Canal (although the club does have waters on the Trent) and the current rules are that if you are moored to the towpath and fishing you must be a club member. You can buy a days membership in essence a day ticket but you are classed as a temporary member but with no voting rights etc. I understand this is to do with insurance requirements. A ticket is £2 at present. I see your point however the theft act (1968 Schedule 1) covers the theft of fishing rights. People have been prosecuted under this act and the Police (when given the correct legislative information) do turn up and take action. I understand the magical distance is 1 meter from the bank for the rights not to apply. On the Trent this is possible but on the canal I deal with then at that distance you would generally be blocking the navigation and I would imagine that CRT have a byelaw that prevents this. However in my opinion and in the real world this is used more to deal with poaching and people taking fish for their own benefit. Of course realistically it's unlikely it will ever come to this. I welcome responsible anglers either on the bank or on a boat. I spend much more time chatting than I do collecting money. I approach people in the way I would like to be approached. However if people decide to be an @r*e then I will be as well. It sounds like the bailiff that the OP had dealings with needs reporting to the club and CRT. Anglers and Boaters should work together to improve the waterways for all!
  19. We used to live in a house with no mains gas so had a valor style heater with a butane cylinder in the back. A lot of people don't like them but they put out a good heat and are fairly cheap to run it could also be moved as required. You could also fit a small lpg fire that runs off the current supply.
  20. Another bit of praise for CRT. Went through Retford town lock on the Chesterfield last Saturday and some knuckle dragging troglodyte had decided to try and break the bw lock on the paddles. One was unusable and the other tricky. Contacted CRT and I got a confirmation before 10am on Monday (by e-mail) that they were investigating it and confirmed on Wednesday they had been and fixed the issue! Now all we need is a way of educating the people responsible. Now where did I put that 4x2? Edited because I never proof read anything!
  21. Brilliant news! Really good to see her above the water again!
  22. Slightly off topic (but an important point) but the Wine in Aldi is often very good value!
  23. I've used these for the purpose they were intended for and also with a tirfor (probably not the correct spelling) if you anchor them in properly then the bank will move before the boat!
