  1. Totally agree. I love sitting on the canal bank knowing I don't have to do anything to it.
  2. Gosh. Thankyou Sooo much. A wonderful tame sorter outer. Just what I need. Kept looking and it seemed to say 0 replies. Only checked when realised last poster wasn't me. However won't worry about that now times sorted. Thanks again.
  3. Please can a clever person tell me how to reset the timings on postings. Everything is showing as summer time causing me to think it's an hour later than it is. I've had this before but not every time the clocks change and someone told me how to change it but can't remember how unfortunately.
  4. Whether there was or not, there's little chance of reducing congestion by getting people out of their cars if alternatives are so exoensive. Oh and as so many hate those who get around on bikes. However this isn't the place for this discussion.
  5. Sounds brilliant. Much easier and cheaper. The Heathrow express alone would cost getting on for that much if you were foolish enough to use it. Obviously best for you but confirms my opinion that we should stop calling buses and trains, 'public transport'. They're not. They are simply a profit making (or not!) Enterprise.
  6. Yes, there's one or two moorings there. I think 24 hours. There's also a mooring without a sign and so presumably 14 day outside the convention centre opposite the real burger restaurant, or whatever it's called. I doubt it's the quietest of spots but handy if you are at an event in the convention centre. You could pop out to your boat in the interval!
  7. Love your post. Great way to encourage mischief makers to hoof it.
  8. Interesting. I would really like the f and b to succeed, it's such a beautiful canal building, felt they could do with a keen manager. Didn't realise boats had been cast off on new main line. Way back, (90s?) We were cast off 2 nights in a row by the indoor arena and also had children jump onto our roof from a bridge there as we went underneath but have not had problems ourselves since.
  9. The stretch you are on does seem to be noisier and we have seen boats cast off there this year though not previously. As an aside we tried the Fiddle and Bone late yesterday afternoon. Always felt it was a shame to see it shut up. Everytime we've walked by since it reopened it's seemed quiet, though others have reported otherwise. Food was OK, standard pub type.. Very quiet though and not a lot of interest from the staff. Large party arrived from trip boat, are they relying on trips to fill the place? Maybe we were there at an odd time.
  10. Rent a crowd to go through then fill with diesel to return - only tempted to go to hawne basin for cheap diesel.
  11. Never hired from wyvern but their boats certainly look good. We don't even regularly boat anywhere near their base but it's surprising how far from linslade some of their boats are spotted
  12. Good you enjoyed. Did you find it easy enough to moor? We've only been on avon once. Loved it but found mooring difficult. It was june so i guess a busy time. The towns were pleasant enough but found the traffic in them awful & off putting. Just loved being moored opposite the theatre in stratford though it certainly wasn't a quiet spot.
  13. Agree. Seems huge cost to have established no clear guidelines.
  14. Beautifully put. Our family situation means that,at present, we move much less than we hoped. However just coming back to the boat at night is so special. Love being on the water. Love the sounds, views etc. One thing I love is the slow changes of season. No longer four seasons but we notice the gradual changes towards each season. Love to watch the trees and hedgerows throughout the year. And yes, tinkling ice sound is beautiful.
  15. Congratulations. Sure you will love it. Must be difficult from so far away as you would spend far too much time and money to see your purchase. I'm sure you will pay careful attention to the surveyor's report. Friend of ours was so desperate to move on board he paid no attention to the detailed surveyor's report and then spent months finding people to rectify faults that would mean the boat would fail it's boat safety certificate.
  16. Yes. We spoke to him on his way last weekend and wished him well in his new life. I have tried to follow the arguments of the case but can't help feeling nothing has actually been resolved. Either way we miss seeing his boat in place on the embankment.
  17. Wow! Impressive. Pleased ally had her question answered too.
  18. Off topic but which is the Uttoxeter canal? The non leek branch of the caldon? You surely haven't made it through frogall tunnel have you?
  19. Not in the least bit amusing. Completely on the contrary. If there were more cyclists there would be less of a problem. I have refrained from answering the rabid anti cycling views on here before. However one of our sons in law recently had a taxi do a u turn in front of him. Fortunately it was his bike that went under the taxi, he was thrown over the roof into the road. Now he's back cycling he again uses the canal tow path. Last week he was cycling in the centre of nottingham at 2 in the afternoon and was watching a group of youngsters as he approached them. As he drew level, one grabbed his arm and asked for help claiming the others were trying to rob him. Our son in law had to make a quick assessment and was able to let the lad get away then catch him and escort him to safety. Not everyone can stop a potential robbery but I feel safer if there are more people about. Putting tin hat on and leaving.
  20. 2-3 Jan likely to suit us better rather than earlier though a lot going on so never sure. I like the idea of somewhere else in Loughborough especially if there's a separate room.
  21. Is it lots? I've seen it on south Oxford and it seems very sensible. What about the Shroppie and Llangollen where almost all moorings are 48 hours?
  22. Not allowed to navigate when river in flood. We looked at the island a few years ago with some interest, then followed weeks when the soar was so flooded there was no boating. The whole area round there is flood plain hence the a6 being on an embankment.
  23. True in that case but in the case of most marinas do need to go in. That's what the boat owners at the entrance to the derby canal claim. In that case it's easily wide enough to wind without actually going in to the actual canal entrance. Anyway I was under the impression that manoeuvring helped dredge a channel.
  24. A very interesting answer. Trying to get head round it. Would cause more problem to marinas if actually went in to wind saying had gone in to get diesel then didn't like the price or found it shut or whatever. is trespass an offence if stick nose in entrance ? Wouldn't damage need to be done for it to be an offence? Finally, do crt signs such as above Swarkstone lock have any legal force? Do our t & c s include obeying all signs?
  25. Yes I too remember seeing a notice-& a boat winding under it. We didn't want to but it really made me want to turn -what justification can they have for not doing so?Am always irritated by crt 'no winding' sign at entrance to derby canal above swarkstone lock on trent and Mersey. Seems the moorers there object, don't see why they should be allowed to stop boats turning - there's a huge area of crt water. Time to reopen the derby canal I reckon. Would make a great ring.
