  3. For our "working" lines we use synthetic hemp from Tradline http://www.tradline.co/default.html. We do also have some braided lines, which although softer on the hands, do tend to absorb moisture.
  4. We got our log-periodic from these people: http://www.aerialsandtv.com/touringaerials.html over a year ago, and it has made an major improvement in reception. I would recommend you also replace the cable with a good quality one, and use the fewest number of joints you can get away with. In some places, our aerial is so good that we don't even have to align it.
  5. We leave our Sterling charger on continuously, and it does the batteries no harm. I would advise on checking the operation of the charger for a day or two before leaving it.
  6. Take loads of photos - and make sure you ask the surveyor about anything you don't understand. Hope it goes well!
  7. Doesn't the term refer to the style of bridge used on the Macclesfield?

  9. The symptoms would suggest that your GI is wired incorrectly. I would expect the GI to be fitted between the boat earth and the shore supply earth, so only active when the shore supply is plugged in. Diagram here: http://www.safeshoremarine.com/diagram%20for%20earth%20wiring.pdf
  10. Early starting *shouldn't* cause a problem, but I have experienced a few black looks from other boaters over the years. Just passing on advice from my instructor on the RYA helmsman course.
  11. You haven't said what time of the year you intend to travel. In mid-summer the hours of daylight will permit longer cruising time. I wouldn't recommend cruising after dark, although some do it, and tackling locks in the dark is positively dangerous. Also, starting before 7am tends to p*ss off other boaters. I would suggest you plan to do about 8hrs a day, put that into http://canalplan.org.uk and see how it works out.
  12. Our Mikuni MX40 will turn on if the cabin temperature drops below 5 degrees - but this is due to the Danfoss controller rather than the Mikuni itself. steve
  13. Droitwich is a pleasant enough place to visit - good shops, pubs and Indian; but I wouldn't know about living there. Close to M5, handy for Worcester and Birmingham. The marina is filling up slowly, but there are alternatives in the area.

  15. Good for you. We are also from Somerset and I think we passed you last week on our trip round Droitwich. We moor in Worcester - great area and straightforward trip up the M5.
  16. Our method of checking: 1. Switch off water pump. 2. Hold down the flush lever 3. Shine torch down the hole and observe fluid level 4. Insert dipstick It is possible to estimate the depth of the tank from where the dipstick coincides with the top of the tank - and a mark can be applied to the dipstick. 5. Withdraw dipstick and wipe clean 6. Release flush lever 7. Switch on water pump.
  17. I usually find that if I am polite to anglers, they are civilised people. If not, best to ignore them. Please calm down..... it really isn't worth getting excited about.
  18. We cruised Newark-Nottingham just last week and I can recommend it. There are moorings at the locks and the major overnight mooring is at Gunthorpe where there is plenty of space and all the facilities.
  19. Should have turned on the parking sensors.....
  20. Our boat has mostly black paint on either side and we not suffered from excessive heat inside - perhaps due to good insulation? I would also comment that whereas the other two colours (red and green) have deteriorated, the black finish has withstood the test of time. I would certainly not want black, or any dark colour on the roof and handrails, as these can become unbearably hot.
  21. We were out on the river last week and it was as low as I have seen it. You can keep an eye on river levels here: http://www.cruisingschool.co.uk/location/river%20severn%20levels.htm
  22. Thanks. That works on my phone and my Kindle.
