  1. I'm really not keen on those type of switches....they seem to fail for a pastime....bit late if you have ordered it now but have a look at the blue sea or bep range of switches. They are more money but they do work at the given current rating. Cheers Gareth
  2. I agree the cut can evolve but at the moment it's running the real risk of becoming a theme park with no relevance to history and why things are as they are. Seeing how things changed over time as motor boats came along...locks were widend...material handling changed etc I agree is very interesting....having fences and signs erected all over the place because the human race appears to be losing all common sense is both a detrement to the present waterways enviroment and will mean we slowly lose the reason of how & why structures were originally constructed as they are. Cheers Gareth
  3. Clearly what the cut needs is more money wasted on public "art"...perhaps a witty poem could be included too... I really am beginning to despair.... Cheers Gareth
  4. There was never a fence there.....the holes are because of the clever desgin of the cast iron plates...they can be used either way up thus meaning a fewer number of casting moulds was needed. They are designed to "wedge" together if you find a picture of the outside of the trough. I steered a trip boat across there for a season....I had a lot of time to look how it was put together....Amazing technology for the time. Cheers Gareth
  5. So you will be quite happy when locks have fences all round them as they are far more accessible to the general public than the offside of the aqueducts? Risk assement is just that..how dangerous is the risk?...if we have to account for people being stupid and causing themselves injury then I suggest that any water can be dangerous....so let's fill in these canals right away. Cheers Gareth
  6. Well I exepected some people on here to think that a fence was a good idea....but I'm greatly saddened to see people who I thought cared about the canals and their history to be agreeing with them...Oh well. In a few years when you have to wear a fall arrest harness before going near a lock don't say you weren't warned. Meanwhile I urge all of you who do see sense and care about heritage and history to email in. Cheers Gareth
  7. You really have no idea do you? Thanks for the personal insult btw...at least I don't hide behind pseudonyms and various names but hey ho.... As a motorcyclist and cyclist believe me cars would be driven with much more care if fitted with spikes on the steering wheel rather than the occupants thinking they are invincible with all their crumple zones and airbags...otherwise known as the Volvo mindset by bike riders! Cheers Gareth
  8. As there is no public access to the offside....unless you are determined...as far as I know on either marple or chirk then unless you are being stupid there is no need for you to be there. I don't think any boaters have fallen off in the last 200 odd years....doesn't exaclty seem a hug risk to me....and where will it stop?...no walking over lock gates as they have a drop on one side with no rail?....fences round all locksides?...all boaters to be clipped onto their boat at all times? Sometimes common sense seems to be in very short supply! Cheers Gareth
  9. Well that was me....as I suspect you well know.....and I stand by it! If you are happy to see historic structures be ruined and money wasted on unessercery stuff then I really don't feel you have any idea of what living on a canal is about. As I suspect then you are just here for cheap housing! Cheers Gareth
  10. I think it should be nipped in the bud now before it gets started....my views will be sent in as I hope others who care about the history and heritage of our waterways will also do. Cheers Gareth
  11. Apologies if this has been posted already but Martin Clark has posted this on the pennine waterways site Pennine waterways link: http://waterwaynews.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/a-safety-fence-on-marple-aqueduct.html CRT consultation link: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/about-us/consultations/current-consultations It's started an amusing(!) debate on the canals and rivers UK group on facebook. I personally think if it's allowed to go ahead then who knows where it will end...Chirk and Pontcysyllte seem likely candidates to say nothing of locks and lock gates.......madness! Cheers Gareth
  12. Well if he wants to send me a pm then I will gladly do so. Cheers Gareth
  13. Well so far several business's have been suggested...isn't that just as damaging to them? Surely if this a discussion forum then information such as this should be discussed openly? Cheers Gareth
  14. Well post 5 doesn't mention who the retailer was which is surely more important than the factory which made it...... Cheers Gareth Edited for a typo
  15. And if you had stated that in the beginning with the name of said chandlers then a lot of speculation could have been stopped and customers who had purchased different lamps from the same supplier could check they didn't have a safety issue. As you have obviously had a faulty product I don't think naming names would be detrimental to anyone. Cheers Gareth
  16. Unless the supplier is named I suggest this thread is locked to avoid undue misinformation about companies. If you have a valid complaint then please don't act all cloak & dagger... Cheers Gareth
  17. Hmm. That's interesting. I replaced the motor on mine last year and an Allen key was included in the motor kit which I used without thinking about it...I then put it in my Allen key pot...that might be amusing if I ever need it again or try to use it for something else.... Cheers Gareth
  18. I find plus gas works well. Something I learnt as a kid was don't squirt WD40 with one hand when you have a blowtorch in the other.....it's very amusing for a while..... Cheers Gareth
  19. I too would heartily recommend the Richlow range of guides....the books are very informative and the help I've had from the authors when I forgot to take one of said books on the actual trip due to leaving it in the workshop was above and beyond what I expected. We enjoyed the journey on the Witham and loved boston both as a mooring and a town. The floating visiting pontoons on the way are very good too. Highly recommend the trip. Cheers Gareth
  20. He's also the chap for arranging passage times and other useful msc info. Cheers Gareth
  21. When we did the trip in a Narrowboat we were told by several people to keep to the channel from the lock and onto the main line of the canal as its only dredged as much as is needed....however I think 10 foot is being a bit pessimistic...i would phone the MSC and see what they say...I can't remeber the name of the chap you need to speak to though! Cheers Gareth Edited to add Just found I still have it on phone Alan Feast 0151 949 6114
  22. Braunston marina is open on Saturday but I don't know if the OP was planning to have moved on by then. Cheers Gareth
  23. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 10 posts to view.
  24. Halfords in Daventry is open tomorrow but it's a taxi or energetic bike ride away....depending on where you are heading the branch in rugby is almost canal side. Sorry I'm not closer or I would drop one over! Cheers Gareth PS is it a standard size blade...sometimes Maxi fuses are used for Inverters?
