  2. Is the Brinklow arm where there is a cast iron bridge at 90 degrees to the canal, in the trees?
  3. I meet very few I’ll tempered people whilst boating. So many lovely people.
  4. Ah. To explain a little im quite a few years from pensionable age. So no pension as yet to pay tax on.
  5. Enough, thank you for asking.
  6. I agree that some very high earners and companies avoid paying tax where possible. When I ran my company I also reduced our tax bill where possible. Still payed an awful lot though. There are plenty of lesser paid people who also follow the route of paying as little as is possible. I am glad I retired. It was lovely last April when for the first time in 30 odd years I had no tax to pay.
  7. We have had wonderful times since we retired 2 years ago. We spend 7 or 8 months cruising with very few problems. It’s lovely on the canals. Most of the boaters I speak with when out boating share my views. I guess that people who want to moan do tend to come to forums such as this to do so. I didn’t boat 20 or 30 years ago but did fish. The canals back then were far from perfect.
  8. I honestly didn’t mean to patronise. I completely agree that we should have more than enough money to sort the countries ills. I just don’t ever see it happening. Anyway, many apologises I meant no offence.
  9. Well il leave you to dream. Time to cast off.
  10. Correct. If I wasn’t out boating and just relied on what I read on this forum I’d probably sell my boat. ‘‘Tis rather a doom and gloom vibe on here at times. We set out late March this year, had a short delay on the Llangollen, cures within an hour by CRT staff. They came out within an hour of a phone call, fixed a loose collar quickly. It’s mostly good out here. Smile and enjoy.
  11. Problem is that almost everything is underfunded in this country. Look at the state of the roads, railways and buses. There is not enough money.
  12. I have been asked twice to become a friend of CRT. I don’t mind being asked, a simple no thanks worked both times. I have no problem with them asking, I know some boaters that have signed up. More money the better surely. I happen to think that what we pay to licence a boat is a bargain.
  13. Yes I’ve noticed. Due to unforeseen circumstances we have been up around Trevor and Llangollen for a month or more. Has been quite entertaining at times. Like it a lot up here.
  14. You may be correct but looking up or down gives a definite impression of a slope. Mind you I have always been easily impressed lol .
  15. Off thread I know but does anyone here know how much of a slope the canal is set at, or how many feet the canal drops from Llangollen Basin to the first lock down? We are currently up this way and there does appear to be a noticeable up or downwards slope to the water level. I may well be imagining it though.
  16. Yes maybe, looks like a breast of a bird doesn’t it? Slightly over though?
  17. We did this trip last summer. Took us about 7 hours from Bath bottom lock to getting moored in Bristol harbour. Loved the harbour, had a great week there.
  18. But some loose rudders shake your fillings free. Also I couldn’t live from an engineering point of view with something that is simple to rectify.
  19. Fancy calling it Bath marina! Thanks for the memory jolt.
  20. I can’t understand why you all seem so hung up about grammar. I can see it as important sometimes, book writing for instance. But on signs? If the sign is generally understandable then that is enough for me. Life is too short!
  21. No distress flare available in case of emergency?
