Had there been a boat coming down this lock as I approached there would have been some confrontation with these prats. However they were not going to spoil my day just for the sake of it. Knobs.

T'appens! I've seen loads of anglers fishing at lock moorings gobbing off at boaters wanting to use it. The 24 hour visitor moorings at Hungerford are apparently a fishing "hot spot" and I have seen a few sets of tackle carried away by boats trying to moor at this particular fishing peg, done it myself too. Ever tried to sleep with your boat surrounded by six or seven rods, all connected to bite alarms?

Last year I passed about four miles of anglers fishing in a match, I was told that BW had been called out to insist on the removal of the signs the fishing club had put up to close the navigation for the match! Mind you, THAT one I find hard to believe.

ooh this topic raises its head once more!!..

yup...the canals were for fishing only, didn't you know that?

well at times they make you think so!

there's been run'ins by the dozen over the years over this :)

They don't seem to bad - at least the atual layby bollards are useable, its when they camp right on them that I get really annoyed and want to wrap them round the prop...

a while ago when we had our other boat there were about 10 fishermen along the bank and we had slowed right down as we always do, we had just come back from spending week on boat and son was sat on back seat just looking and all of a sudden one fisherman sarted shouting effing this and effing that, sticking two fingers up, making hand gestures, another time we were coming through selby canal and you have to be slow anyway even if there isnt fisherman as you would just bedragging the bottom as it is shallow in some places you can see the weeds growing from the bottom of the canal anyway we were going very slow for the fisherman and one started shouting slow down my brother who was with me at the time said if it was me steering i would have reversed and gone by at full revs, on sunday we went out with the bat and we were coming up to moor at pollington for some water there must have been at least 30 fisherman all in a line on the bank with poles that reach from one side of the canal to the other, anyway we were getting hard over to righthand side of canal although there were 12 foot barges there so we got as close to them as possible to make sure we didnt catch there rods etc, fisherman are a bloomin nuisance sometimes (well most of the time actually)

To be fair, despite my last post, I've only had one spot of bother with a fisherman, and that was coming to the defense of a first time hirer who'd panicked because the angler didn't get his pole out of the way 'til the last minute and the guy didn't know what to do. I think this might have something to do with their response to a big ugly bloke on a big ugly boat. Despite being a lot softer than I look, I wouldn't mess with me :) .

In our limited experience of cruising the canals, this hasn't happened to me yet.

I do hope it does one day though :)

I've done that before, it's quite effective.

Cruising by a couple of old fishermen. They started giving me a load of abuse when I got next to them. Put my hand to my ear to gesture that I couldn't hear them so they broke out screaming and shouting.

Hard into reverse, picked the revs up and reversed over their spot... "Sorry mate, what was that didn't hear you?". Then they started screaming at me to get lost so, looking totally innocent, clutched in and full forward. Should of seen their faces :)

Another time I was told by some pillock spinning, that I shouldn't be towing breasted up on the canal as it's not allowed. I think I just replied with something like HAHA and then went onto ignore them.

This thread should do wonders to promote understanding and tolerance between canal stakeholders. :)

It didn't exist before, I can't see this thread doing any more harm. Them canoeists dangling stuff at hillmorton though. They're fun when you're trying to slalom them in a motorised big ricky with no front end.

I thought this topic was going to be a "How to do It Thread" :)

Best way is to cycle over their 'poles' (ouch).

But then we have to stop annoying the cyclists.

Edited to remove dangerous suggestion of how to annoy cyclists.

I've asked this before and got no answer, does anyone know, or where's Eugene when you want him?

The Environment Agency standard rod licence is currently £24

How much (if any) of this goes to BW?

What about regional angling clubs (e.g. Birmingham Angling Association) who claim rights to certain stretches of towpath, how about their fees?

which is all fine and dandy , but when your doing all the right things... slowing down, da di da giving them room tra li laa and still get abuse...then what? its going to take a pretty strong (thick skinned person) to keep getting/taking verbal abuse from these people and not give any back....

to be honest how much cruising have you done? because when you are out there all the time, it happens frequently.

trust me.

I don't think the Angling clubs fees are relevant (or very high, when I fished). Most of the towpath seems to be freely available to anglers anyway. Presumably the proportion of the rod licence fee is part of the central govt. grant and I'd bet a larger chunk of BW's goes to benefit the angler than EA's. After all they have better towpaths, access and facilities than the EA rivers.

To be honest, grand total, all of 6 weeks.

But now the boat's fully usable we should be getting out more this year.

I was just thinking then......they will be out every weekend through the summer months...

to be honest my heart sinks when i see a match, because you know the verbal abuse your going to get...obscenities uttered in your direction :/ not worth venturing out weekends me thinks :)

I dont mind them usually and I have not really had any major runs ins, a few snarls, the odd hand waver telling me to be in the middle/offside/nearside (Wish they'd make their mind up), one or two "slow down mate", answer is "I'm going slow enough, mate".

But in the photo I've posted there is not enough room for me to park the boat on the lock bollards, whilst operating/waiting for the lock. Without crushing his keep net, possibly damaging a load of his equipment and going right accross his fishing area. Which I would have done had it been necessary, and I'm a big fella as well, and it would have got nasty. So just as well it didnt happen.

Why do they assume all the fish are on the other side of the canal? I've seen these poles going accross the canal from both sides before, whats all that about?

You park yer boat do ya, and moor yer car? :)

I don't understand why people fish near locks anyway. As soon as those paddles open do they really think any fish is going to hang around to get blasted by thousands of litres of water travelling down the cut sharpish..

I don't know maybe they do! :)
