Thornycroft antique diesels

I have one of these from a HMS Queen Mary (I not II) lifeboat. Anyone know of any schematics or technical details? I got it running a few years ago, but want more info if available. We sleeved the cylindars, got good compression and cleaned the injectors to get it operating, but now I want to recondition to orignial condition. It has been sitting for over 10 years since I ran it! It is water cooled and has a bilge pump, fuel filter wipers, as well as a reduction gear built in. Could not find a serial number, or model number on the engine. Weighs about 800 lbs.

Might be worth contacting these:

Though only Thornycroft by name, it is possible they may have records, or may be able to point you in the right direction.

'Pete23' on the forum has a Thornycroft twin of about the same vintage as you.

You could try PM'ing him

edit:

Mike the Boilerman put a link to some photo's on a previous thread: link

...... any excuse for a bit on boat/engine porn ;)

There was another of these, back in the days of the Any Old Boat Club, in a boat called Ladywood IIRC. I think the model number was Thornycroft RJ2.

Have you any photographs? , always a help.

The pics from mike the boilerman are nearly identical.... i will post mine soon! What i am looking for is some kind of service manual, or stuff that the lifeboat operator would have been given! Someone in UK has the documents......Thornycroft has changed hands and no reply...

Tis one of them, but still would like manual or instructions for servicing if available. Thank you all for your help. next i will be tracing some air cooled diesels I own ....one a Hoch, and another a chinese both electric start.

Yello,

I have a small sales pamphlet (I presume) for Thornycroft engines of that period. It features side on photographs of RJ/1, RJ/2, RJ/4, RJ/6, RL/6 engines. It's a small fold out booklet that I found in a loft years ago.

The RJ/2 18bhp engines being the ones fitted to the Queen Mary and Cunard White Star lifeboats

PM me if anyone is interested in it.
