Trojan T-105 battery charging tips

Please read my last paragraph again and respect it.

Respect what?

Several pages ago, Tommy wrote: 'I am recharging again today and it's showing 15.15v 100% on the Smartguage and showing 15.4v 4.8ahs on the charger.' (My bold)

I asked you about his Smartgauge voltage reading because of the above. It seems that, at the time, his charger was showing 0.25V above his smartgauge reading. We didn't have the luxury of a voltage reading at the batteries with a DVM.

Just now you said that, before you worked on it, Tommy had 15.1V on the charger and 14.51V at the batteries, which is 0.59 difference. I simply wondered what his Smargauge was reading at the time that you measured 14.51V at his batteries. Simple question really. It would have been worth knowing how accurate his Smartgauge voltage reading was, while you had a DVM in your hand.

I find it difficult to respect anything you write or state. Couldn't you just simply answer the question? Perhaps you never looked, or weren't interested?

Evening all. I think we have a result. The cable from the charge to the batteries had a volt drop of 4% approx thus 15.1 at the charger was only was 14.51 volts at the battery. Cable and all connections up graded. So now 15.1 at the charger is 14.94v at the battery.

Generator is now work harder going by the noise increase suggesting more power getting to the battery.

I have lots of figures etc which I need to fully analyse and that will have to wait until I get home and recover from trip probably Wednesday or Thursday next week.

Well TOP credit to you for going and visiting Tommy and investigating directly.

I'd give you a greeny but I'm out of them today.

I think you've done a good job too, but I just asked you a simple question and you rebuffed me. No greenies from me!

Think about it, why do you think I put the last paragraph in. Do you think all the numbers are in my head, they are not so certainly not to hand until I get home.

Finally just had fish n chips, got another 10 miles to drive and I will crash until Monday and then dive home.

Maybe you should not make fun of me or make or join with derogatory remarks.

If it had been me there, I would have at least checked that there's a correlation between the two, since it's Tommy's only way of measuring his battery voltage. I would not have had to refer to my notes for that basic check. Especially if I had been arguing for ages that a Smartgauge doesn't do a good job! (Maybe not your exact words.)

I'm not making fun of you at the moment. I stopped doing that when you appeared to accept that marina charging regimes differ from towpath ones. But I still regard you as a good theoretician only, being a little short of outdoor experience.

Thank you for a tired grin, I really don't care how you regard me. With regard to accepting towpath regimes. I have probably prepared more boats than you have to exist off grid. There was always a problem, but maybe I have, thank to something someone said I may have a solution to that. But a few months of playing with the idea so laypeople can use it.

Now I am going to drive to my boat, have a cuppa and go to bed.

I am just wondering whether I will bother to post the details. No reason why I should when I think about it.

It's not important.

Greenie, for what it's worth and time to go home.....

So why hassle me over it, just because you think you can. You are blocked and hidden when I get to my laptop and I will never read a post of your's again.

Hear, hear - what you've done makes being on things like this forum worthwhile and it's so sad that there are people like that who make us think it's not worth bothering, in more ways than one.

Rise above it.... they are not worth it.

Notwithstanding the technical and other disagreements, and also allowing that I don't know how far Tommy is from Graham, I would just say that there is an act of kindness here which deserves credit. It sounds like Graham has travelled some distance to try to help here, and I for one hope he enjoyed his fish n chip reward.

Of course, we haven't heard from Tommy since so, if he's been blown up, I may yet have to hastily edit the above! ;)

I wasn't hassling you, I was asking whether or not his Smartgauge voltage was similar to your DVM at the batteries. It was more about the Smartgauge than your re-wiring.

I also said I thought you'd done a good job, a few posts ago. Still, blocking and hiding is your prerogative. Bye bye!

:) Tommy, when last seen having carried gear back to my car was hale & hearty. I have reason to believe he is at a birthday party, so the forum is likely not to hear from him until recovery is complete.

Kindness is what makes the world go round. It was my pleasure to help him and I will go back up if required.

Hope that makes sense

Thanks SeaDog, nothing more than some have done for me on the cut.

So reassuring to know there are still a few good people left out here. Well done you.
