rupertbear
I'm assuming that this is the oil filter on my DM2:Can anyone answer for certain the following, please? Does it have a disposable filter element or one which will require cleaning? If disposable, what will I need and where might I get it?I'm hoping to turn two messy jobs into one. Thanks
captain birdseye
Mine is a disposable cartridge but is a bit bigger than that one, Ian Crompton of (Michael Ian Crompton Diesel & Marine Services) is RNs service Engineer, and usually gets mine for me. David Schweizer
That looks like a standard CAV oil filter which uses a replaceable paper element. There should be a nut on the bottom of the casing to remove the outer cover. There are easy ways, and difficult ways, to remove it. The easy way is to remove the whole unit fron the engine block by undoing the two bolts that hold it on, empty contents into a container, and dismantle on in a bowl. If it is the same as the one fitted to the BMC 1.5, the filter number is Fram CH 814 PL, Cooper GP 223, BMC 3317, or if you ca finf one ( Now discontinued) Crossland 455 or 418 It is a bit hidden, but you can see the CAV oil filter on my engine in the photo below, it looks the same as yours. ( the grey sprayed one, not the Crossland one) Edited April 2, 2015 by David Schweizer
steamraiser2
It's a disposable filter. Wipe it off an there will be a manufacturer's name and part number printed on it. With that information any decent motor factor will be able to source one for you at a fraction of chandlery prices.

rupertbear
Thanks to all, there's a good variety of advice there. I'll have to disassemble it first and see what's inside - if there had been a unanimous verdict then I'd have got the filter in advance and done the change in one operation.
