My wife and I grew up and lived in Littleborough for 30+ years - how nice to hear good things about it.

As you pass the Summit pub on the way to Todmorden, up to the left you will see ventilation shafts for the 1.5 mile rail tunnel below.

If you google Summit Tunnel Fire you will see some amazing photos of when a train crashed and caught fire within the tunnel.

My brother was a fire-fighter who attended.

Curiously we've not yet had to use the bolt-cutters ourselves but we've lent them out twice - once to you, once to someone with a brand-new boat who'd picked up some springs on one of the low pounds through Worcester (just upstream of the Commandery, I think). If you don't all hush up about how nice the Rochdale is it will get busy, spoilt! Pru and Tim caused an increase in the number of shire hires coming up the hill.

Posting from the centre of hebden, having come from lock 35,our mooring, yesterday, to lock 15, Shaw Plain Ends, where we were halted by a huge unruly tree which had gone for a swim. Tree (3) fellers set to early doors and we moved on again about 2 pm. Fascinating watching them clear it with a tiny rowing boat and a tirfor winch.
