________________________________________

Original message:

The offside bridge abutments of Caravan Lift Bridge, 215, have collapsed. This has caused the brickwork and timber bridge to fall into the canal and block navigation.

The canal is closed to navigation and the footpath over the bridge is also closed.

We hope to get contractors on site as soon as possible on 27 August 2014 to remove the timber bridge and rubble from the canal, so that navigation can be reopened.

Further information will follow when available.

Update on 27/08/2014:

Our contractor is currently bringing equipment to site to enable us to lift out the bridge and remove rubble from the canal.

We hope to reopen the canal tomorrow, 28 September 2014, but more specific information will follow once known.

(they mean 28 August).

So who is responsible in CRT for the South Oxford, and what is their response to the question would it have been financially cheaper to have done preventative maintenance of both the wall collapse at Napton and the Bridge collapse at Pigeon lock.

Both of which could have injured customers.

Which structure is next are Paddy Power offering odds ?

it would be interesting to get that answer, don't hold your breath.

Maintenance, reactive & proactive are all words that come to mind. Which does CRT prefer?

There are a number of locks on the Southern Oxford where the tail walls are on the point of collapse If I were a betting man, I'd say Kidlington Green is next.

Likewise, many of the lift brige holes are in very poor condition.

It is poor maintenance. The brick work needs re-pointing. If it's not done, water washes behind the brickwork, erodes the ballast/soil behind it and the walls collapse. It's not rocket science.

Came through it this morning. The canal is open however it's shallow where the bridge used to be. The orange tape is still there where the bridge used to be is covered in a white taupaulin. The lift bridge itself looks like its has a recent coat of paint, unlike the foundations which are now a big pile of rubble in the field!
