Or in the Winter..........

All this only doing repairs in the winter is a modern phenomenon. You must remember locks being repaired throughout the year back in the 1960/70's. Mind you they didnt take as long as they do these days. I seem to recall the top gates on Uxbridge Lock being replaced in a couple of days back in the 1960's, and they didn't have a crane, just a huge quadpod, block and tackle, and a crowd of men.

A 'crowd of men' costs more than hiring a crane these days, and don't forget H&S now dictates a 'crowd of men' are only allowed to lift a 'a few kilograms'rolleyes.gif

When they installed new gates at Bradford on Avon lock a few years ago they had a huge crowd of men (far more than they had a Uxbridge in the 1960's) plus a crane, and it took them weeks!

Health and Safety assessment obviously has an impact these days, but the reality of the graduated block and tackle system (or whatever it is called) is that an enourmous weight can be lifted quite easiy by just a few men.
