Recommended overnight stops on Llangollen canal

HI all,

Have booked a 7 night narrow boat hire from Trevor over the Easter period 2014. Would ideally like to head straight up to Llangollen and overnight there on the first night. Then explore Langollen on Sunday and head off mid-late afternoon to continue on.

There will by 6 on the boat ranging in age from 45-87 yrs, so we're after a relaxing, no stress cruise. Any suggestions on how far to travel each day (while still getting to explore any interesting places), best places to overnight, pubs or places to get reasonably priced evening meals, or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Jayne

Welcome to the forum Jayne. If you go to Llangollen on the first night you can moor in the basin on one of the jettys ( overnight fee was £6 but this may change for next year). I will leave it to the local forum members to give you up to date info on the best pubs to visit.

You could visit the Llangollen Railway which is very near the basin - you may be lucky and get a short trip on a steam train.

Thanks Steve,

Husband and brother-in-law are avid steam train buffs so that is certainly on my to do list ;-) Hoping to fit in a ride on the train and explore the town, so 2nd days cruising would have to be only a few hours before we need to stop somewhere for the night.

Cheers

Some of the boats from Trevor have solid fuel stoves as well as central heating. if yours is one of these do get fuel, kindling and matches and try using the stove.

I don’t know how able the older members of your crew are, but be aware that the canal at Llangollen is perched above the town, so it is either steep steps or a road with a hill to get back to the boat, also the pontoons in the canal basin are floating, so they bob about a bit when you jump onto them, alternatively you could moor to the towpath at Llangollen, the towpath is provided with rings, power and water and the charge is the same as for mooring in the basin.

The town of Ellsemere is worth calling into. There’s a large Tesco for supplies, but do try the very well known delicatessen in the town called Vermeulen & son. We always visit the Indian restaurant tucked away in a back street at Ellsemere, nothing special but OK and makes a change from pub food http://asianspicesellesmere.com

The Llangollen canal is very good if you want to moor in the pleasant countryside. The Shropshire Union Canal Society have a number of marked sites where the bank in piled and mooring rings are provided so easy to moor and plenty of water under the boat.

Hi

Mooring is good in Llangollen, obvious sites lively little town with railway. We moored 1 night at Chirk Bank before aquaduct, popular pub at Bank, walk into Chirk, small village nice shops. Ellesmere also obvious mooring, water point etc. Nice little town good Tescos and Deli as mentioned. The large pub facing the T junction on leaving the moorings (cant remember name is excellent for food) Various takeaways and always a buzz around the moorings people barbeque etc. You can moor in the secluded spots by the meres Ellesmere lakes slightly out of town. We bought a picnic and overnighted by the lake very pretty.

If your taking it easy then in 7 days you could turn round here and head back. Id say the best overnight stops are Llangollen, Chirk, Ellesmere. We stayed 2 nights at Llangollen, Ellesmere is lovely if its sunny you can stop at the town or lakes.

Hope this helps

Hi Jayne

Interested to read your post and replies re Llangollen canal. More amazing your location ! We are fellow Tasmanians who have done 3 UK hire boat trips ( 2 x Mon & Brec, and Kennet & Avon ). We have taken the big step and are in the process of buying a 26" Sea Otter. Although based on the River Wey we will get it transported to Llangollen for a 6 week next year. Happy to share our experiences if you want, have you done much narrow boating ?

Cheers
