Rowers!

Proper Job

I think it had taken them all day to get there from Oxford.

Assuming they left Christchurch College Boat House on Staurday morning, about 10 miles and 5 locks. Not great progress if your target is Cambridge

At least on the wide they'd have had a chance to do a few strokes before shipping the oars again

Slightly off topic, but I passed a kayaker today whom I regularly see gliding along the cut but this is the first time I've passed her while I was underway. She looks to be, from my very limited knowledge of things, a very competent kayaker and looks very graceful in the water and manages her kayak/ canoe with seeming ease.

I saw her from a fair way off and moved over to the right and got as slow as I could without losing steering (which is pretty slow) and more or less waited for her to pass me or indicate what she would like me to do.

Instead she came to a dead stop and held her position on her side of the canal and waited for me to pass her- which I duly did as this was evidently what she wanted me to do, and she waved and smiled when I did- but this makes little sense to me?

As I understand it, it's pretty hard to keep a canoe or kayak upright while not moving and surely there would be more risk of wash from me passing her that might unbalance her (albeit I passed slowly and gave her a wide berth) than she might risk by making progress to pass me while I hold steady or on dead slow tick over?

Or am I missing something.

I would like to know what I should do next time, assuming the canoeist/ kayaker doesn't indicate clearly what best works for them.

I've come across many canoeists on the canals over this summer, while I'm sure there is proper guidance out there, I'd suggest the following:

- AFAIK they should be obeying exactly the same rules as everyone else, eg passing on the right, etc

- Slow right down, though, because they do tend to make bizarre decisions

- Normally they'll either end up going to the side (most of the time the towpath side) and hanging on to the bank, to let you pass

- In theory, even if you come close to them you're unlikely to physically hit them due to the wash from your bow

- Beware of coming up behind them and 'losing' them in the bow shadow (area you can't see due to the bow obscuring it)

- They might not notice you, don't be afraid to give a quick sounding of the horn (but do it from a distance, so as not to startle them!)

- They are in theory much more maneouvrable than you, so trying to drive round them etc isn't effective - let them get out of your way.

Hi canal folk.

I was one of the people in that Eight man rowing boat that started this thread, and I just wanted to let you know that we all enjoyed reading about ourselves here :-)

I definitely agree that we looked entirely lost and unprepared as we went about our way, and having seen the photos up the top I can agree with your view that the endeavour was doomed.

However, some of you may be interested to find out a bit more about our, in the end (after MANY, VERY challenging days!!), successful journey.

Here are some links to the web resources about it, and a few photos;

Thanks for making contact. Where should we send the bill for paintwork?
