Gas alarms & mooring rope

Hi, I've just moved on to my first narrow boat. I'm looking for a good but inexpensive gas alarm. I've come across this for around £25 on eBay. Any advice?

I also need to buy some new mooring rope. Any advice on length & type of rope?

Many thanks!

We have one of these from Amazon and it works fine - only £14.

For mooring rope we use this:

For the bow and stern.

If you have a centre ring on the roof a couple of ropes there would be useful too, but make sure if the centre ropes fall in the water they are short enough so as not to reach the propellor.

I personally would steer clear of multi braided rope.

Look upon ropes as disposable items and change when worn.

Well, carbon monoxide is a gas, but perhaps Douglas was thinking about LPG?

This is interesting. These products look like they're for houses rather than boats, but some say they're powered by 12v and/or 9v battery.

That's a good link Ray cheers.

We bought ours from Midland Chandlers and paid a ruddy fortune for them (naive at the time) I think they are polypropylene and are wearing fast.... won't be having the same again.

I briefly thought the same but realised he was talking about CO when I clicked on his link which lead to a CO alarm.

Fab, you have answered my own mental questions here. I have just had delivery of ropes from the link on this thread and I was very pleased with the service I got. Iv am also looking at the same gas alarms so will order one now. There are also the laser magnets for sale on ebay at the moment too which seems great value.

The Ebay link is actually Tradeline at Braunston.

When I click the link it leads to gas, CO and water leak protection and a CO and gas detector.

Although I'm not sure what a CO leak protection device would be exactly - unless it's a detector/alarm?

Strange can't explain that at all it works for me and it has carbon monoxide in the link

ed ah yes the title of that page and the link refers to a CO detector but the text refers to 'gas' also.

- perhaps the Op needs to clarify which type of gas he would like to detect...

Apologies for any confusion re: the gas alarm. The ad says CO- but later gas & carbon monoxide:

Thanks for comments about mooring rope too.

GAS /CO/ LPG DETECTOR COMBINED. 12V / 230V WITH LCD DISPLAY

Thanks!

If passing through Braunston it is well worth taking a stroll into Tradlines place. Being able to see, and handle, the ropes is far better than looking at any advert - and they are a really friendly bunch, full of helpful tips, and will make up a rope for you "while you wait" - when they say "It will only take a few minutes" they really mean that, and they don't rush.
