classicstove
You could always scan the original licence and stick this to the outside of the boat ?

My latest BEALUK catalogue has an MOT plate holder for £5.95. I have to investigate the dimensions of an MOT plate compared to a BW licence but they look similar. At £5.95 it is about a quarter of marina price for a brass one. www.beal.org.uk George ex nb Alton retired ps I have just googled to find an MOT plate is 185 x 204mm. Not being at my boat, how does that compare to a BW licence? George Edited January 23, 2011 by furnessvale

tony collins
If you mean the square brass holders with a glass? insert, then most chandlers will stock them. Years ago when BW licences were square (I know,I know - stay with me) Most chandlers stocked a brass bulkhead licence holder. It was a well made and sturdy product. When stocks were at their highest ,BW suddenly without notice changed to circular window (ala car tax) style licences. The result was every chandler had stocks of redundant licence holders which they couldn't sell. Wait a few years for all the stock to be scrapped/otherwise got rid of and suddenly change back to square ones again! Aren't BW wonderful? I guess there will be fewer chandlers taking the risk of putting in large stocks of the product that you need, although you should still find one. Chertsey
We have these brass holders on Warrior and they were not trouble free. First the glass cracked because of minor unevenness in the brass. We replaced it with polycarbonate. Secondly, the rubber seal was ineffectual, possibly for the same reason, and the licence got all wet and ran. So it is now sealed with silicone, which makes it a bugger to change. I have seen people with working boats with (presumable a copy of) the licence laminated and pinned or stapled to a convenient piece of woodwork. Although you are theoretically required to display your licence, BW's ability to check your index number remotely against their records means that this requirement is obsolete and in my experience they're happy if you've got a licenbe rather than being too bothered as to whether you display it. Canal Shop Man
The company who made square brass licence holders stopped making them last year, so we commissioned some to be made for us, which promptly sold out. We have another 30 arriving shortly. You can get them through this link: Licence Holder - they are £16.49 Just realised that I never got round to putting a picture on - I will rush to my boat and rectify that in a few days

OldGoldy
whats an mot plate? "Plated weight This is the total permitted weight of a loaded vehicle. Each vehicle should carry a permanently fixed Department of Transport (DfT) plate (also called a Ministry plate) and plating certificate (a VTG7 – for all vehicles and trailers). If there is no DfT plate, there should be a manufacturer’s plate. DfT plates are fitted on trucks at first registration and on trailers after they have undergone a DfT annual test." furnessvale
Mine are 98mm high X 103mm wide. So this MOT plate holder would be ideal for those who have to display a licence AND a mooring permit. George ex nb Alton retired

Guest
yes, i agree they can check simply by cross checking the bw number, but I have had 2 tickets in the last few months for it! My understanding - based on a conversation with a lady at 'BW licence central' in Leeds (when mine was late coming) is that the hand-helds that BW staff use to check numbers are not fully up to date.... so you may get a ticket, easy (but a bit inconvenient) to contest... When I'm out boating the licence is displayed in one of those square brass holders attached to the engine room bulkhead. However, when the cloths are up this can't be seen. I put the licence in the headlamp when I'm back at the mooring not so much for the benefit of BW, but to deny other boaters the pleasure of using the snitch line. I quite agree about the uselessness of these brass holders and the difficulty in keeping them waterproof.

Interesting. I was basing my comment on the fact that I got a ticket when I didn't have a licence, but I didn't get another one after my licence arrived, even though it was ages before I put it on the boat.
