I was looking for a Gardner, and came across this:

A bit big for what I want, but awesome.

Very nice engines, arguably the best ever but the boat is such a big project its a bit ridiculous.

The BN price is a bit high for a pair of 8L3's.

It may be regarded as sacrilege, but I'd be more than happy to just have the engines and not the boat. The sound of a sweet running Gardner puling hard is pure music to the ears.

British Engineering at it's absolute finest.

Surely that honour belongs to a Rolls-Royce Merlin as fitted to a Spitfire....

Couldn't agree with you more. Which is why I refrained from saying it was the absolute best sounding engine.

Much as I love Gardners, the Merlin does sound better.

I was lucky enough to be at Dorset Steam Fair a couple of years ago when a Spitfire and a Lancaster did multiple swoops over the showground.

And the Lancaster has four Merlin engines!!

And what sounds better than one Merlin? - Two! Mossies at ten feet +

Does the mosquito have Merlins as well then?

Yep! DETAILS.

Derek

PS And when they took the Allinson out of the P51 and replaced it with a Merlin - it became uncatchable. But not as pretty as the Spitfire.
