Stern Tube / Gearbox / Engine Maladies Part 4

Featured Posts

I thought it was engines that you normally blew up?

Aha, so it wasn't just me spotted that then!

Richard

Paul, wait 'til you have the engine, then we can make a proper plan

That looks like an R&D semi-flexible coupling as made for Lister 6-bolt flanges. IIRC they only use 3 bolts per side.

Tim

Cheers Tim, having looked up what you mean, aye, looks likely.

So the gearbox output flange bolts on with three bolts, then the normal lister shaft coupling bolts onto the stern-wards end with the alternate three bolts?

Cheeky!

I'm working on engine acquisition at the moment!

Ta Tim, so still need a shaft coupling, Richard...

Did you find the shaft, straight, true and up to the right size? A rattling good fit, to coin your own phrase?

PC

No idea yet. It's currently lounging in the sun in the conservatory next to the other shaft and a very shiney prop.

Richard

Under the tomatoes if that helps

Hang on...

No, the shaft is still quite hard, so not ripe yet

Richard

Are you sure it's not like an orange, once picked from the shaft-tree, it'll no longer ripen?

Anyhoo, we've got an engine!  ;) ;)

Hmm, it's a bit bigger than I thought, as evidenced by the disbelief in the seller's eyes when he thought I was joking about loading it into the car I was leaning against. This is my dog-eared motor by the way, quarter of a mil on the clock and four broken springs, but that's okay, it was worse with three, at least now it's level...

Bit of a scary view:

IMG01511-20100527-1626.jpg

Made it back in one piece at least, despite it steering the car itself, even though tied down well...

IMG01512-20100527-1726.jpg

Front mounting looks same as our SR3 one, apart from we've a smaller pulley on that camshaft, closer to the engine.

IMG01514-20100527-1727.jpg

As Tim said, a three-alternate-bolt style R+D coupling.

IMG01515-20100527-1727.jpg

The prop isn't any use I'm afraid, it's for a 1" shaft, and looks a bit on the small side anyway. It'll probably be for sale soon once Creamcheese has been at it with the brasso.

IMG01516-20100527-1728.jpg

The engine came with two flexible mounts - in good nick, not split or anything similar.

Not sure why it didn't come with four, reckon it even had four?

IMG01518-20100527-1729.jpg

Anyhow, I'm well chuffed with the engine, seller was willing to start it, but since we had a way to go with loading it, I didn't want to waste the time - the offer seemed genuine anyway.

Reason for removal - it was in a 65ft boat and underpowered, plus they wanted a water cooled engine for water heating etc. They put a 4cyl Perkins in, instead...

Gearbox appears to work too, but as said, this'll be coming off and our LH150 going back on. The LM100 will be for sale too, and since I now know where to get the bearings from, I may get enthusiastic and rebuild the reduction on it, 'cause it's the same as ours.

What do you think, comrades?

Don't be in too much of a hurry to discard the prop. I don't know what is standard size for an ST2, but since it gets its extra power from higher rpm than an SR2 from a similar engine capacity, I'd expect it to be smaller than an SR2 prop. You could always reduce the end of the shaft to suit it.

I'd like to have a look at that prop too please Paul. I can put it under the tomatoes for a while until you've got the engine in.

Richard

Tim, turn the shaft down or bore the prop boss?

Turning down the shaft is by far the easier option, though it would get in the way of you changing the prop in the future for another with 1.5" bore.

Boring the prop would be the better engineered job, if and only if the boss is big enough, but it's more of a specialised job to do.

I'm tempted to drop it onto the taper on the existing shaft and see what's what. Anyway, that can wait until the prop turns up, and we are going boating this weekend

I think the boy done good

Gonna fit it and start it this weekend?

Tony

Aw, ta Tony!

Aye, if the helpful digger operator is around, then we may get it in - otherwise, we may be trying to cobble a gantry up...

Our ST2 in our 'main' boat has a 17x16 on it, and is maybe very slightly over propped. The shiny one is something like 18x13, which I make to be just right and if anything under-propped. 17x16 matches prop-calc quite well, for the project boat.

The tiny one that came with the engine, I've not measured, but looks like 15xnot-a-lot or simlar.

PaulCatchPole == Eddie Grundy

Richard

I had to look this up, I'm not exactly an Archers fan - but maybe I'm getting old enough to be within the demographic? ;)

Mind you, I'm choosing to take the description as both a compliment, and worryingly accurate in some ways...

This former tenant of Grange Farm can often be seen doing casual work on the farms of Ambridge, sometimes using his ancient tractor or digger. But Eddie's got a finger in more pies than Mr Kipling, dealing also in garden ornaments, compost, landscaping and anything else he thinks will turn a penny. He admits that selling illegal meat was a bit of mistake and was fortunate to escape prison - although to be fair he didn't know the meat was condemned. Perhaps Eddie's best bit of luck in recent years was a windfall from his old milk quota. This allowed him to buy Grundys' Field, which has become a base for all the Grundy enterprises - including an illegal cider den. No wonder Clarrie despairs.

I'm tempted to drop it onto the taper on the existing shaft and see what's what. Anyway, that can wait until the prop turns up, and we are going boating this weekend

Richard

Do you want me to drop it round this lunchtime - are you at work? I'm only round the corner, as you know, and the engine/prop is in the car still, cause it won't come out!

My what, to what? :o

And he's right you know, what're you doing going off boating when there's more exciting things to be machined & fettled...?

There are about three different paces to this project.

Medium paced is the actual rebuild of the boat at Stockton. I'm staying away from that as it has far too much necromancy about it

Slow paced is the stuff to do with the actual prop and stern tube. Things happen as they happen, and I'm digging my heels in to make sure it all happens properly.

Fastest paced is the frenetic postings and PMs. I really need a bigger inbox!

The prop can wait while PaulCatchPole and CreamCheese have a merry weekend hurling engines around and painting each other with blacking

Richard

I'm off to Stratford
