Does only having three posts to their name make them any less of a member?
To be fair to Ardwyn he has been a member for almost a year and there are a lot of members who enjoy reading the forum but feel no urge to contribute regularly.

Exactly. Dont see what the problem is there.

- Thankyou Ardwyn for making a public announcement.

- Thankyou also Janet for using the report post feature to bring them to the attention of our moderators.

- And Thankyou Theo for acting on the reported post with speed and removing the offending material before most of us where awake. (hours before me anyway)

I would like to know how these posters get through the filter system. Registration as far as I recall is not automatic so why are the spam checking sites not being used? After all we know we have at least one youngster who uses this site! (Hope she is well on the way to recovery now).
Anyone can register on the site. They must provide a functioning email addres, which is validated before posting is allowed, and they must correctly interpretate a reCAPTCHA phrase. However if they do that, they are members and can post.

- Real email address is easy, tick, done.

- Reading the recaptcha requires a human eliment, but is not means infalable. Infact any literate human should be able to read it. Thats the point.

User validation does not require approval by forum staff as the number of new users joining would make that a prohibitvly time consuming task if done with suffenicent care to be any use at all. And futhermore even if done with as much care as is reasonable to presume to far from infalable in itself. The fact of the matter is that ulitmatly its often not possable to tell a spammer from a genuine user untill the post.

I would like to point out that over the years I have built and run many sites, including many forums on different subjects. This morning when I saw the 2 posts by LAManthew, I thought I would contact one of the admins, which I did, PMing DHutch making him aware of the posts.

I am aware that some people are sensitive to this sort of material, and I certainly wouldn't want my grandchildren inadvertantly opening a post of that nature, so put this post up. Now if people want to look, knowing that there are pornographic images in the post then that is their choice.

What I resent is the fact that some members, who I don't know personally, think that they can make insinuations about other members here.

Athy: I have been a member here since February 2009. That is 10 months, only 5 months less than you. There are over 600 members joined since me. How long do you have to be a member before you are no longer a newbie? Is there a time limit before you are allowed to report spammers for posting to a site that you like reading. Do you have to make a certain amount of posts before you are above suspicion of posting porn?

MJG: If you were the first person to see those posts and thought you should alert those members who don't wish to see such content, are the rest of us to be suspicious of you?

Janet S: If I hadn't made the post, then I assume you would have, from your statement "You beat me to it...". With reference to your "There's nothing more guaranteed to get views apart from a "do not read...."", how would you have worded the post, so that members who didn't wish to view it, didn't? I'm well aware that so many members viewed the posts but they did that knowing full well what what the content would be. Those members not wishing to see such content were aware of it.

bigcol: The heading says exactly what was in the posts (porn photos) and who the posts were made by (LAManthew). What was I supposed to put to stop people who didn't want to see such content?

I would like to point out that with the current registration, like most other forums, anybody can go to hotmail or any of the other sites and get an email address with no link to them. Register on Canal World, go to their inbox, click on the verify , and voila, they are a member, free to post whatever they like.

I would like to say thank you to Idunhoe, Carlt and DHutch, for not jumping to conclusions as others have.

If you mean the phrase you quoted, I don't need to Google it ?

I was wondering why you had used it, in this case.

But as someone else has said "Don't ask", perhaps that's good advice ?

Because I think a simple repost to us would have done it for their 5th post in a decade or however long it is they have been a member.

Don't think we all really needed the lecture.

But as ever I'm likely to be out of step with (CWF) public opinion.

I often read on here that the moderators and admin are overworked etc as an answer to any complaint made about them. If that is the case, why not use more admin/mods? (don't shoot me down in flames this is not criticism but a genuine question)

I did not jump to conclusions. I quite reasonably expressed a suspicion. When it was pointed out to me that mu suspicions were groundless, I publicly apologised to you. Vot more you vant, blood already?

Suggestion:

Of the two or three spam/porn posts that I've seen, ALL come from overseas. Is it possible to make any applications with a non-UK location, wait 12/24hr for Moderator approval, during which a quick 'Google' will often reveal their motives. Merely stating they have to wait for approval may put them off.

Just a thought

it works on plentyoffish the dating/friendship site where we have a system in place that if a topic or a post comes up that is suspect then the next 10 longterm members that log on get a vote on should it stay or go the majority vote wins.
