RLWP
Are the gunnels the bit that's like dado rail? I've now completely 'outed' myself as an uneducated eejit! If you imagine a narrowboat, it has a hull (the bit that floats) and a cabin (the bit that keeps the rain off). Down the sides of the cabin the top of the hull has a step to walk along. This is the gunnel. Because of this the cabin is narrower than the hull, so if you plan your furniture layout based on the floor plan you get caught out by things that are tall. Like sofas. Notice the back of the chair here: Does that help? Richard

deletedaccount
Having been on my boat all of three days I can happily say the freestanding furniture I've got is excellent and all thoughts of a sofa are out of the window. Guests can sleep on the floor as far as I'm concerned Man do I love my boat
SarahB
I'd love to get rid of my fixed seating as its not comfortable for long term sitting. Its the storage I'd miss out on though. I have very limited storage to start with and I'm not sure I can throw much more away Hm maybe I should seriously investigate two comfy chairs and then some sort of boxy storage/double up as a table for when I'm studying type thing. Sarah and Ian
Not sure if this is to late. We have bought a bed settee from Wilsons. Its small which I would say makes it cosey to sleep on. Early impressions are very favourable. Ours was the Thames model so with small arm rests to increase practical space. http://www.wilsonsofkinver.co.uk/furniture...s_sofa_bed.html Ian and Sarah

I think they're probably a bit deeper though. Ah, here it is: £664 quid though! (and almost 1000 in leather!) How much was yours? Me, I think I'm going to stick with my freestanding ikea recliners for a while and see. This does mean guests have nowhere to sleep for the time being, but I'm thinking of getting a 3 inch thick mattress topper for my bed which can be whipped off and put on the saloon floor when needed. Ours was £638 so not cheap but the mechanism is really robust and takes seconds to set up. Not slept on it yet buts its very very comfy to sit on! ChrisPy
More than double the price of Intosofa, but the Kinver sofas are narrow enough to fit across the cabin and leave some space to get by. My Intosofa is fine for a widebeam.
David Schweizer
If anyone is interested, my son is getting rid of an Intosafa sofa bed like this one in a mid brown colour . The seat cushions are a bit worn, but new covers can be bought from Intosofa. He is leaving for Australia in a few weeks time, so any silly offer will be accepted, colection from the Bath/Bradford on Avon area. My Intosofa is fine for a widebeam. I've been chatting to a bloke at intosofa and they'll supply one of their small sofabeds with one arm missing and a bit of plywood to take up the strain. It works out at about 120 cm or so wide, which is just right to go across the cabin. Less than 300 quid too. I think I'm going to ask for both arms so that I can work out which end is best to miss off and to give myself some flexibility when re-aranging the boat. Now I've got meself a girlfriend a sofa is becoming a necessity
Bones
has any one had a selection of sofa beds from a variety of places, and thus able to make a comparison? I am still drawn to the sofa beds designed for a narrowboat as I am looking for a 4ft wide bed, but they are rather expensive and before I spend the money I would want to know whether they really are worth all the extra dosh compared to intersofa or Ikea. We have a Wilson's one and although not cheap at around £400 a couple of years ago it is very comfortable, both as a sofa and as a bed. It is also very easy to convert from one to the other and you can store the bedding underneath when using it as a sofa. They delivered and assembled it at our mooring which is a long way south of Kinver and that was included in the price. Many years ago we had a cheap sofa bed at home in my son's room for his overnighting friends, I lost count of the number of times it collasped in the night waking everyone. I think it is a case of you get what you pay for. Ken
deletedaccount
Hmm. Still umming and ahhing about my stove means my end layout is in flux. A wilsons sofa bed is looking more and more appealing though, esp because it's a proper bed size not a single like the others I've seen.

I was under the impression that Intosofa were designed with boats in mind, I saw their ad in W.W. and having bought on was very impressed with quality and comfort. I was surprised when it turned up in 4 packets which went into our boat with no problem.

The problem with boat stuff is it is hard to tell whether you get what you pay for or whether you pay for the fact that a company has the monopoly and can charge what they like! Guest TowpathTownie
I've now decided against a sofa-bed and opted to have a built in corner sofa constructed with leather seating. Not cheap, around 1500 but it will have storage under each seat together with a hideaway for a table behind, and will be large enough for one person to sleep on if necessary. I changed my mind due to the amount of time I'll be sat on my sofa in comparison to the number of guests that'll need accommodation. I can always give up my bed and take the couch
Bones
I have now done some 'research' and found that the narrowboat ones are substantially more size economical. It seems that they do last a long time and take up less space, but are they really worth it. I shall now spend months deciding whether they are or not! Bones
do you have in situ photographs you could share? I have often measured out in the boat, but visualising it doens't seem to work for me (it does for everything else, but not for sofa's for some reason!)
