Canals past and present on Google Earth

Does anyone else use this as a route planner? I find it excellent for previewing mooring places eg proximity to shops etc. It is also interesting following canals no longer in use or being restored eg Thames and Severn and the Montgomery. If you have not tried it yet, have a go and say what you think. (also say what you think if you have!)

I tend to use the Microsoft equivalent, the Birds Eye views can be brilliant:

This one is definately not live. The shot of my house was pre 1999 as buildings taken out in a big fire in 1999 are still there!

The site is constantly updated. It is worth noting that the aerial views and the birds eye views (where vailable) have normally been taken at different times, indeed the four different birds eye views have often been taken months apart.

I am finding it very hard to check if it is live as when I go outside to wave to the satellite I can no longer see my PC screen.

Must depend on the area you are looking at cos the birds eye view does not work for the post code of my home town and the picture is at least 9 years old. However when I check the Marina post code Birds eye works but my boat which has been there for a year is missing!

Hope it's there when I get back tonight!
