Adam1991
Hi, we’re servicing our engine for the first time. It’s a barrus shire 40hp. We’re recommended to use “sae 10w 40api class cd oil’ in the manual. our question is do we need to use that exact oil and should it be barrus brand? Or can we use a the generic 10w 40 oil that comes up on a google search. There seems to be loads of different brands so not sure if they’re basically all the same. thanks! Tracy D'arth
Use generic, same stuff, just not crazy price.
blackrose
As well as using the correct viscosity you should check the recommended API specification of the oil.
David Mack
Barrus don't make their own oil, so anything with a Barrus label will be someone else's rebadged (and probably more expensive). Alternative sources are fine, but make sure it is API CD. Many oils in petrol stations, motor accessory shops and DIY sheds will be a higher spec more suited to modern car engines, and not suitable for your boat. BEngo
Have a look at the website of Morris's of Shrewsbury. They will probably have an oil that meets the spec you give, including the API CD element, and they are usually reasonably priced. If not Morris's try Classic Oils ( Bicester) based.
