It is true that it doesn't connect directly with any other canals, but it has navigable links to the Grand Union Canal and the Oxford Canal, via the Thames, and with Bristol via the Avon, or (if you are brave enough) to Gloucester and the Midlands via the Severn The main reason for it's deliberate abondonment was trade competition with the G.W.R.

The K & A canal did not "fall" into disuse, it became un-navigable because the Great Western Railway, who had owned it since the 1850's , deiberately abandoned any maintenance. It was in effect allowed to fall into decay, often encouraged by failure to repair damage.

The way the rest of the system, including the K&A, is going unless more proactive maintenance is carried out in the near future.
