Pete-T
I keep a 5 gallon jerry can of fuel as an emergency supply in the front of my boat. Is there any time restriction on how long you should keep fuel before using it?
MtB
What fuel is it, exactly? White diesel from a petrol station? Red diesel bought 10 years ago? FAME-laced red from a boatyard in 2020? Or what?

Pour some out into a glass and see if it is crystal clear or has any clagg in it. If crystal clear I'd use it immediately and replace it. Repeat next year. I'm no expert but just posting to prompt some better informed replies.

PD1964
Why keep it so long? Just put the canned fuel in your tank when you get fuel and top up the can with fresh. That way you will have a regular turnover of the canned fuel, so it should be ok when needed in an emergency. Or do you not use much fuel? David Mack
Why do you keep 5 gallons separately from your main tank? Surely better to fill up when the tank is getting low rather than letting it go almost empty on the basis that you have a reserve supply. That way lies problems with bleeding and sucking up crap from the bottom of the tank. And a Jerry can in the front of the boat is easily stolen. LadyG
I would treat it with the bug stuff then put most in to your tank, leaving any crud behind.
Chris John
Why would any fuel in a clean Jerry can (if full to the top) get diesel bug or have crud at the bottom?
Tracy D'arth
We have fuel in bulk tank for months, some of it will have been there years mixed with fresh at every refill, it doesn't go off or get any bug because there is no water in it and it is only clean that goes in.
