Peterborough . GU along River Nene

Featured Posts

Thinking about going to Peterborough after lockdown, can someone give me a quick overview. Pub stops, facilities, places to see or avoid. Is it worth the trip along the Nene. Is it more like a river or canal?

It is very much a river.  It’s nice but there are very few moorings.

Pumps out, water...are there many?

Don’t do pump out so not sure, there are a few water points.  Really the services are at Wellingborough and Peterborough, there were at few more water points if I remember correctly.

Most Marinas have pump out and EA ones are at Wellingborough and Peterborough.

FOTRN provide moorings on the river and it's well worth becoming a member.

Water points at Wellingborough, Thapston, Oundle, Wadenhoe, Peterborough.

The above is all from memory so I may have missed some.

Theres also the one at  Fotheringhay next to the bridge. Though Ive never tried to use it so it may or may not work.

Nice mooring there too though you have to pay..

As I said I might have forgotten some. There is also Elsan disposal at Fotheringhay but you have to know where it is ;)

Yes and I am not posting it on here, however if you ask the Farmer when he collects the cash he may or may not tell you ;)

Are any of the locks on the river manned?

No

and unless they have normal gates both ends they must be left empty with the bottom gate raised

Aren’t they all normal gates? Do you mean leave the bottom paddle raised? Tx

No

Only  three or four locks have mitre bottom gates, Ditchford has a radial gate and all the rest are guillotine gates.

Some of them are hand wind rather than electric so they will keep you fit 😎

Personally Peterborough would be bottom of my list of reasons for visiting the Nene - don’t care much for the place.
But the Nene is beautiful - lovely countryside, pretty villages, attractive river. Fotheringhay is a delightful spot to moor and the farmer’s fee goes to church funds.
Quite a lot of locks but almost all guillotines are electric. And do join FOTRN.

That’s great, think we’re convinced to go for it mid April, are there many pubs on the river?

On the river only a couple or so, off the river in the villages quite a lot.

Remember lockdown rules will be restricting those that can open in April.

Tx, appreciate only outside service and if it’s like round here many pubs won’t be opening till full service resumed.

If you have a gold licence then nothing extra is needed.

If you only have a cart licence then you will need an EA visitor licence that can be bought from Northampton Marina

The Anglian Pass is only needed to cross the Middle Level after Peterborough.
