Heartland Posted November 24, 2020 Report Posted November 24, 2020 The boat Semington is said to be moored on the Trent in this image. It would be use to confirm this and what type of craft it was
John Brightley Posted November 24, 2020 Report Posted November 24, 2020 This should help: http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/gloucestershire/hi/people_and_places/newsid_9040000/9040719.stm
Heartland Posted November 25, 2020 Author Report Posted November 25, 2020 Yes, it could be Gloucester. The barge is of interest in its own right as Semington is a place on the Kennet & Avon Canal, and the date of 1911 would be consistent with a craft associated with that waterway
magnetman Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 (edited) It looks a bit like one of those "floating homes" conversions but they were usually built on wooden Ricky butties as far as I know. Made on the Basingstoke canal. There was a video on the tube about them at some stage. Here it is https://www.britishpathe.com/video/new-barges-for-old/query/Basingstoke Edited November 26, 2020 by magnetman
Dorlan Posted November 26, 2020 Report Posted November 26, 2020 I think that Heartland's photo of Semington was probably taken in Victoria Basin in Gloucester Docks. After leaving Gloucester Semington was moored on the Severn level of the Avon, between Tewkesbury Lock and the A38 bridge. Unfortunately, probably sometime in the late 1980s, Semington was left on it's side in the river after it was caught on the bank when the river fell after a flood. I have a couple of photos of the sinking, somewhere!

She was recovered from thar spot in 2022 and I'm in process of buying the hull. 2
Bee Posted February 11, 2024 Report Posted February 11, 2024 She was in Gloucester docks for a long time and i was told she actually was an old K&A boat.
Grim Reaper Posted February 11, 2024 Report Posted February 11, 2024 Just now, Bee said: She was in Gloucester docks for a long time and i was told she actually was an old K&A boat. She's about 10 foot to long and 4 foot to wide for the k+a, I did have the same thought with the name Semington. I used to love down the road from there at Seend.

It had been severed in 1901 by the collapse of the Stanley aqueduct and not officially abandoned until 1914
