yep...but clue was in me saying getting underway in a hurry (trying to get the dog out of the cut / neighbours boat / just being awkward etc) which is why i missed the oppotunity.     Normally corrected by putting Mrs Dharl on the helm so i can have a stroll down the cabin top and rectify it before losing too much proffesional standing ?

Low bridges permitting ........

Must have been a wide boat to start with. A typical 6ft 10in modern(ish) narrow boat could have full overplating on the sides and still fit through any narrow lock without fenders down  (except perhaps Hurleston).

Ďo we know who built it?

Initially read the words in brackets as "except perhaps a Hudson"

:) Safety First.  Engine in neutral and not close to locks or bridges when on the roof!    If not safe to do then wait till it is safe to do so, has kept all my limbs attached during my seafarering careeer and good place to start on the canals too!

Not necessarily. The process of overplating also distorts the hull. Ours was overplated on the sides, only up to just above the waterline, and I was surprised to discover that it had become wider by about an inch at the level of the rubbing strake that is about 9" below the gunwale. It was no wider at the gunwale itself, but those top 9" now have a distinct slope. Inside, I had to re-hang all the doors and re-fix one of the bulkheads. Luckily as my boat was built to be 6' 10.5" wide it is still a half inch less than 7' but it is something to be aware of
