Phil Speight
A question - and I ask it entirely because it`s something I`ve often wondered about . It implies no criticism whatsoever (unless it`s simply a way of being rude to people in safety which surely isnt the case.) Why do people in magazines and ,more particularly , contributors to this forum , use false names. I can`t spell pseudonyms this morning - or maybe I can after all. Cheers Phil

Cheers Phil I dunno, when i first view'd this forum i foundmost of the names appeared to be psdonums as you would find in chat rooms, maybe for their own false sense of security, and then we give it away with proudly stating boat names and location. If the general consensus is to be open ill happily change mine

Chris J W
People have been using "Nicknames" on internet (and BBS prior) systems ever since their creation. I suppose originally stems from early hackers and fone-phreaks that didn't want their identities to be known, and now it's just become one of those things you do because "it's always been done and everyone else does it." If the general consensus is to be open ill happily change mine I didn't know we could change them... Mine is simply the first domain name I bought - couldn't have chemweb (chemistry web) so had to have webchem - web chemistry... Most other sites I am member of are professional so people generally use their proper names - 'cos thats the convention. Its easier to hide behind a pseudonym and there-in lies a problem... Alec Gatherer
I have wondered how, many of the names used, were decided on. OK Bottle, here goes: Alexander is a traditional given name in my family and refers to my paternal grandmother's family name; Stuart refers to the Clan link; and Gatherer is apparently a reference to a distant ancestor's task of collecting taxes for the Bishopric of Aberdeen. Nice of you to ask.
Sir Nibble
My given name is Jeramy, usually Jerry, my surname is Underwood, I am usually to be found lurking in the seaside town of Gosport on the Hampshire riviera. I am an auto/ marine electrician, this places me in a position to be able to help folks out by occasionally supplying replacement parts for alternators and starters, which gives me considerable satisfaction. My name is Snibble, I am a beer hamster (Mesocricetus Cerevisius) I am usually found lurking where boaters are less than sober. This puts me in a position to be able to deliver virtual beer to good likkle boaters in the manner of a small furry alcoholic santa, which gives me considerable satisfaction. HYBRID
Search your real name using google, you might be surprised by the information you can find, you might not. With identy theft on the increase I am not happy posting too much personal info on the web, unless it could promote my business as a Male Escort. The Escort bit is a joke by the way. StoneHenge
Simply put, I love stonehenge, I was proposed to in the middle of it, we love the summer solstice (but are not druids), it's holds a magnificent amount of mystery and I have the same forum name for both of the sites I visit regularly, one of which identities are protected for safety reasons, so it's just stuck! It's a bit of fun as well I guess!

saltysplash
I was christend Geoffrey. aparantly, mumsie, before i was born wanted a girl, and wished for gillian, when salty arrived and was pronounced to have a 'winkle' mumsie wanted something similar to gillian, so declared julian to be the answer, Father, being blood and fire northern see all say nowt no son of mine is going to have to cope with being a julian would have non of it, so geoffrey was the compromise....only mumsie calls me geoffrey by the way, to evryone else its either geoff or sod off. Saltysplash was a nickname i was awarded at work (wont go into the reasons) Am also known as 'Jaffa' amongst my sailing chums because the 4 yr old son of my bestest chum couldnt pronouce geoffrey... Price is the family name however the grandparents were Coopers from Rochdale and Fishers from barnsley. Life, work and fate now finds me at Chatham on the river Medway following 2 divorces and a current Swmbo who is lovely. Although not happy this morning coming home to find every light on in the boat, The wheel house, starboard side(right hand side to you canaliers) bench seat wet through and the sea toilet full of water seeping onto the shower floor coz she had left the tap open!!!! She has however slept in the focsle so that she wont disturb me coz im on nights....awwww... the downside to this is....her bunk is right beside the bulkhead for the sea toilet, and have you ever tried to pump a sea toilet quietly? but i hear from the snorings emitting from the focsle that the alcohol is still doing its job And she is why the old tub is up for sale and we are buying an NB together. She hates bouncing around on the sea and i wouldnt go back to living on the land. Oh yes i forgot to mention, Daughter is 21, she is a Wilson. shacked up with a young whipper snapper scaffolding type. Im gonna be a grandad in February.......IM ONLY 43!!!!! honey ryder
contrary to what people might say, honey ryder isnt my porn name, its the name of my boat... although i still havent gotten round to actually putting it on the boat yet. my real name is jayne toyne and if you google me, oh boy, you will get plenty to read. jayne apparently means god is gracious... i dont believe in god, or that names have a meaning... my parents just realised it matched my surname letter for letter... saddos. the surname came from scotland originally. I actually come from chesterfield, more precisely a small fantasy land inhabited with fish wearing bose speakers as shoes and where beer flows upwards. Yamanx
Mines a nickname I got from the motorcycle racing paddock. I built a Manx Norton replica from a Yamaha for early stock racing. Was quite famous and featured in a couple of mags, rubbish bike though blew the engine up at Snetterton and sold it.
Dr Bradley
Part of what will (soon please) be my boat name. Used, I suppose because it's what most people do, not for security reasons. Incidentally, if you google my name you'll find out absolutely nothing - when will I have my 15 minutes. And just to satisfy anyone intersted, I'm Colin Priestley from Sowerby Bridge. Edited to add:- a popular thread - over 20 posts in under 2 hours. One of the reasons I have never used pseudonyms is I have never had what you would call a creative streak ! In some cases it becomes the 'done fun thing' as with the Traffic correspondants on Radio 2 "Brad Ford, Dusty Rhodes" et al
