  1. I usually tie up to a tree near the Swan. Might be dangerous getting back on the boat after a brewery visit... It often involves an ornithological move.

  3. The pecking order is, I believe: Yoghurt pot; Jelly mould; Gin palace; Wedding cake (must have at least three tiers in white with a couple on top). The Thames has arguably the highest density of interesting-looking boats in the land. There'll be some lovely launches and steam boats out over Easter.
  4. I put some on the bits at the bow and stern where one steps on and off. Purchased the self-adhesive tape (about 2 cm wide) from Lidl around 14 years ago as a special. It's still in perfect condition. The patches have been painted around a few times. Good stuff that German tape. I bought two rolls and still have one and three quarters left.
  5. Runnymede isn't far, is pretty and has plenty of space, but a busy road in spitting distance. It's feasible to tie up in the bushes outside the Swan at Staines which gives one a minor sense of adventure and the pub is OK. Being Easter, if the weather is OK all the yoghurt pots from the marinas will be out so space to tie up might be limited. I find the stretch from Staines down to Hampton Court unuttterably dull with banks lined with suburbia. There are a few quite pleasant riverside pubs though, and Hampton to Teddington is nice.
  6. Cookham should be easy in a day. Nice village, Stanley Spencer gallery if you like art, pubs. Goes through some of the finest scenery.
  7. You'd be pushing it to get to Oxford and back from Windsor in four days.
  8. Also the lockies expect you to turn off the engine as soon as the ropes are secure. Beware that some locks underlet water from the sides which can cause panic and consternation if not expected.

  13. Me too. Used it mostly for carrying chairs, beer, wine etc to music festivals. Sturdy. Only issue is that the wheels clog easily with long grass and mud. We don't see much of that at uk festivals.
  14. I suspect that in most installations a NRV is solving an imaginary problem. Our NB hasn't got one, and our shared oil tanker used to have one until I took it out. The latter enabled me to remove the expansion tank and repurpose some space in a cupboard.
  15. Only necessary if there is a NRV between the accumulator on the cold side and the calorifier feed (and if that accumulator is adequately sized for expansion).
  16. If anyone needs a side mounting fender eye, I left one in Hurleston bottom lock. Just needs finding and welding on.
  17. I've always found that a small brass shackle breaks nicely when needed. Might be easier than cutting through a link.
  18. We use them at home for dimmable standard lamps on a separate circuit to stop someone plugging something inappropriate in.
  19. Statistically nonsense. Consider the hypothetical example that 80% of the population score 1 on some arbitrary scale of intelligence and 20% score 0. The average score is 0.8 and most of the population score higher than the average.

  21. XLR connectors. There is (sort of) a wiring standard for 24V and they're good for up to 15 A if you pick the right ones.
  22. I think the costs mentioned might be a bit on the high side. I had the prop replaced, a new taper machined on the shaft and stern gland repacked with change from £1000. No, the stern gland was repacked with the proper stuff, not bank notes. Doesn't include dry docking as we had the blacking done at the same time. About 8 years ago so add a bit for inflation.
  23. I used a metre of flue, two 45 degree bends back to back and a short stub to go through the collar. I think it gives about 120 mm offset.
  24. Don't know about the BMC 1.5, but a Beta 38 was pretty much a drop-in replacement for our BMC1.8. The gearbox housing fitted, it just needed a new drive plate and some tweaks to the engine mounts.
  25. I've slightly lost the plot but that is a raw water cooled engine, probably direct as I can't see an intermediate hx. Was it isolated and drained before the first frost?...
