  1. I for one like Braunston, and will be passing through/stopping their tomorrow afternoon all being well. There are a lot of boats moored and often quite a few moving, but it is only a small part of a cruise so a nice contrast to the open country. We quite often leave Braunston at 5pm or so, having spent the afternoon in the pub or walking round. We prefer to moor in the country and will head back to around bridge 100 for some open country side for the night.
  2. I have to admit that I bought an ebay one as an extra. Have 2 BW ones on the boat and the ebay one is on my car keys. I use the ebay one a lot, but admittedly in the same locks, and it works fine.
  3. I don't see the point in a timer, you just set the thermostat low, and when the temp drops the rad come on. We have 2 on the boat, 1KW and 750 watt I think, and it stopped things freezing up last winter, at least to the point that we had no damage done. Over the whole winter last year probably used £60 of electricity. Our idea is to be able to use the boat over the winter, but to be honest last year it was frozen in solid for quite a lot of the time.
  4. I have to say that the only thing you see when you look at it is a swan, even for those in the know, I don't think you really see the bridge at all, and the proportions are all wrong anyway. So I'm with the "White Swan" pub sign I am afraid. I hope it can be improved upon.

  6. I can only echo what others have said, so sad to hear this.
  7. Yes just seen it as well, well done for all involved in getting the publicity for this.
  8. True, but strictly speaking Garrison is not part of the BCN Edit to add: The main map does not show it either.
  9. On the BCN map; . the Farmers Bridge and the B&F needs to move over one junction. . looks like there are one too many loops on the new main line to me, the one going to Smethwick Jct. . no Walsall Town arm shown . show a stub for Hockley Port?
  10. Most people in our marina have the shore line connected all the time. As it if it is doing anyting then that depends. Normally the only thing I would have thought you would have on all the time is a multi-stage battery charger, but with the up coming cold weather we will also have a couple of electric old filled radiators on frost setting. If you don't have anything that you want left on, then I guess there is no point in having it connected.

  12. Whilst this is a bit groundhog day, as we did this yesterday, registering a domain name is easy and cheap so all the relevant combinations should have been taken care of, it's the world (internet) we live in. For example you can have canalandrivertrust.net or canalandrivertrust.info for $9.98, or canalandrivertust.eu for $5.88 if you want them, so its not about cost at all.
  13. You are right it is still open, perhaps building over it would be a step too for for them to get planning consent. Looking at the plans the "pedestrian greenway" is a line of the canal, but hard to see restoration after this is built. Somehow I find their statement a little cynical given this is on the canal line. A canal would be a much better water feature.
  14. That is bad news. Would that be the end for possible restoration?
  15. I should have tried it! Interesting it does not come up in whois. Edited to add, my error was not including UK domains, that was registered on 27 July by British Waterways as well.
  16. Sorry this is getting me going. So canalandrivertrust.com will be the web domain for the new charity, there is a holding page there that directs to waterscape.com. That domain was registered on 27 July 2011 (so well planned), but they seem to have been a bit lax and not registered canalandrivertrust.org, which given this is a charity and not a COMercial organisation would have seemed equally relevant to use. Quick off the mark Thomas Crossley from narrowboatworld.com registerd that just over an hour ago . Looks like canalandrivertrust.co.uk is still free if anyone want to splash out a tenner on it. These are professionals doing this arn't they? Edited for spelling.
  17. On the positive side, if you accept that the logo has to change, I think the new one is not bad. Not that different to the BW one, and more importantly suggests that the black and white colours will be kept.
  18. Strange stuff. The have specifically gone for "Canal & River Trust" not "Canal and River Trust", presumably to avoid the CART acronym and associated humour. If Wales can have "Waterside Wales", why is it not "Waterside England" as well, does not seems logical to me, even though I think that is naff.
  19. I believe that you pay council tax at the lowest band. How long is a piece of string? It is however not going to be your major cost, it's not like car insurance. Largely for comprehensive insurance it is a factor of the value of the boat. Lots of online quotes, here is Craftinsure's, google will find you lot's more.

    Pets?

I though it was mandatory to have a dog . Seriously LOTS of boats have dogs and other pets, and yes I have seen a few with caged birds.
  21. I thought the superstition was exactly the opposite, in that you should not have the old name anywhere on the boat. Perhaps it does not really matter which way as it's all superstition
  22. When you go on the Thames the visitor license card has a "V" number on it, you display one of those in windows each side. That number I believe is the boats name as far as the EA is concerned for the visit. The do record the boats real name on the visitor licence application form, but interestingly not the BW number.
