  1. The Sheffield and South Yorkshire is slowly being reopened three and a half weeks after the flood began. Lots of dredging to do in the lock chambers. Still some sections out of action. Jen
  2. By reaching through the Bizzardtechtm Meccano Time Portal to the next day and retrieve some kindling from the future, dried by the fire he is going to use it to light.
  3. You can also roast chestnuts on a solid fuel stove. At first I thought that was what the thread was about. Do Aldi sell chestnuts and why has @Nightwatch spelt it Alde? Then I realised I'd mistaken it for this thread: Jen ?
  4. What @Onewheeler said. Immersion heaters tend to either work, or not work. Partially working is unlikely. Any idea what power your existing one is? Boat ones are often 1kW, but higher power is possible, if your shore line can take it. You are running it off a shore line, not from batteries aren't you! Most people seem to find 1kW adequate. The "gas" cylinder is either an expansion vessel, if it is connected to the hot outlet from the calorifier, or an accumulator, if it is on the cold water side, downstream of the water pump.
  5. Also Hockley Port. Again no vacancies at the mo.
  6. However Denham Deep lock is currently broken, so you can't go via the Grand Union till it is fixed. Jen
  7. Yes they can, but cost only. No profit margin. Mine comes from CaRT as it is one of their moorings and is currently(!) 15.8p a unit, including the infrastructure cost. Jen
  8. Not choc blocks. It is for my crimp connectors pictured in my post:
  9. BCNS is Birmingham Canal Navigation Society, so is obviously Brum, not London. Didn't make that clear. I've edited my post.
  10. Something to consider for city towpath mooring. More boats moored makes yours more secure. I'd be very wary about mooring in many parts of Brum and Manchester. City centres are often safer than the suburbs. Local knowledge and your own gut feel are guides. I moor in Sheffield and have seen a boat burnt out that was moored away from the safer sites. The BCNS publish a list of mooring sites their experience has found to be fine around Birmingham. Not been to the Smoke by boat, but I've read anecdotal reports that say that the increase in the number of lived on boats in London has made previously highly dodgy areas safer to moor. Jen
  11. Yes. Taking the photo of the whale gulper has nudged replacing the insulating tape with heat shrink on to my to do list. I've since acquired a selection of different sized heat shrink tube in a variety of colours. No idea about self amalgamating tape. Jen
  12. 15p a unit is typical of the what you'd pay in a house from one of the half dozen big suppliers at the moment, so not unreasonable. Your concern for the mooring owner is commendable! There are laws for mooring owners that say they can't charge more than their costs for leccy. Jen
  13. I can see the news flash now. "Motorway closed due to jack knifed lorry. Ecofan blamed". "I tried to stop." said the traumatised driver at the scene. "The ecofan was in control and just carried on pushing. Nothing I could do."
  14. Make sure the ecofan is removed from the stove top and put somewhere safe. @mrsmelly would be very upset to hear if it fell off and got damaged! ?
  15. The lorry could be going up to 60mph, so I'd remove the pram cover, or the wind may remove it for you! Empty the water tank. If it has a pump out tank, empty that too to save weight on the crane. Turn off diesel stop cocks from/to the tank. Possibly gaffer tape cupboard and other internal doors shut to save them swinging and pulling on the hinges? Jen Edit: Post clash with @mrsmelly!
  16. You can use male and female bladed crimp terminals, or bullet connectors to connect up a piece of equipment, rather than a choc block as @blackrose says. This gives you crimp connections, but can be dismantled. I usually put a male terminal on the 0V supply wire and a female one on the 12V supply wire, so that when disconnected there is no chance of it shorting to the hull and makes it harder to connect the item reverse polarity (BANG!). I do have choc blocks on the boat too, but they (almost) all have boot lace ferrules on them. The 240V mains wiring with Arctic stranded cable all uses boot lace ferrules. or The connections for my Whale Gulper shown below. 1/4" blade terminals, male and female. Another advantage of doing it this way is you can size the crimp connectors to the wire they are going on. In this case thick cables to cover the distance from the batteries without undue voltage loss (yellow), connecting to blue crimps on the thinner Whale Gulper. Fully Insulated receptacles are better, as per the photos above. These were not, hence the insulating tape. Jen
  17. I have had a water pump leak from the pump body without affecting the outlet pressure and hence making it cycle. Without this warning it dripped a considerable amount of water in to the cabin bilge before it was noticed. A leak from the pump, or anywhere back to and including the tank could do this. Jen
  18. Has any party committed to repeal Ohm's Law in their manifesto? We could use much thinner cable then. Should this be on the general election thread? Is it a law based on an EU requirement? Should it be in the Brexit thread? Jen
  19. Apologies. I misremembered what you'd said in reply #6. @Chewbacka's suggestion is a good one. From the sound of it, I have a similar, if not identical header tank on my boats back boiler heating system. They do need topping up once, or twice a year, due to evaporation. Consider draining it down and putting in some fresh inhibitor at some point. If the boat is going to be left unoccupied in winter sometimes, then some antifreeze inhibitor is a good idea. Jen
  20. Pressurised, so be careful not to get scalded when removing the cap.
  21. 12W LED reading light. Scorch the page you're reading. Read fast 'cause you have to turn it before it catches fire! Jen ?
  22. There are lots of on-line voltage drop calculators. A typical one here. Worth reading the entire page the calculator is on. Buy from a supplier that tells you the cross sectional area of the wire in mm2, not Amps current capacity. Jen
  23. Maybe half full when cold? If that is too much the excess will be vented out the pressure cap. Good news it is working. ? Jen
  24. Or use get_iplayer, which bypasses having to tell the BBC your Grandad's inside leg measurement. Still need a licence to download legally. Link for windows version. Linux and Mac also available. Jen
  25. Another possibility is that there may be an electric pump in the plumbing loop through the boatman stove. If this is not switched on when the stove is lit, then this can lead to local overheating and header tank overflow may happen. Not all heating systems have, or need a pump, but some do. Whereabouts are you at the moment. There may be a CWDF member nearby who could be willing to take a look. Jen
