  1. I have set my ebike to run above 15mph not because I want to go fast but simply becayse I find it much safer. Why? If it's set to 15mph then it simply just my cuts out any assistance until it drops below 15mph this can be dangerous if it happens mid critical manoeuvre e,g coming out of a junction or overtaking a vehicle. The reduction in speed is instant and, particularly on a hill, peddling power in a given gear may cause staling, not nice at any time but particularly dangerous in traffic and mid manouvere. When the law is an ass and introduces danger then I'm happy to argue my case.
  2. Got a house point for that around 1965, used it give the weight of a gallon of water which is 10 pounds.
  3. It would appear that in modern usage Furlongs are only used for horse racing and canal measurement. I've managed 7 decades plus without knowing that. Edit to add that seems to be used in London underground measurement, http://thewordden.blogspot.com/2019/10/word-to-use-today-furlong.html
  4. I was about you post similar but then I found this ". In some English canals navigated by narrowboats, distances are measured in furlongs and miles." It is apparently to do with the fact that narrowboats can be horse drawn. Bit disappointed actually as I quite fancied a bit of pedantry.
  5. I have 2 electric 250w bikes, no different to riding an unassisted bike in that the same rules and considerations should be followed. However due to age and health I am unable to use an unpowered bike for very long. Ebikes have been a major boon for me particularly when having to travel a few miles for shopping. Anything over 250w is both unnecessary and illegal when being used as a bicycle and when cycling rules and laws are being followed.
  6. Was it over Easter? If so it may well be the incident one cited in the CRT article. "...To allow as many people as possible to enjoy these locations we’re asking people not only to respect the maximum stay times but to shuffle up and share the space as well. There’s nothing more frustrating as a boater after a long day’s cruising, than to arrive at a visitor mooring to discover that there’s absolutely no space to moor because everyone else there already has moored with "smaller than boat sized" gaps in between them. This is particularly annoying when if everyone had been sensible you could have fitted in a 70 footer! Or you discover that there’s room for you if another boat moves just a foot or so and they refuse to do so with a lame excuse like "I've just set my satellite dish up." Honestly, that happened to a boater over the Easter holidays" https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/boating-blogs-and-features/boating-team/shuffle-up-and-share-the-space
  7. For visitor moorings CRT are quite clear "No, on visitor moorings it’s about using the space economically and leaving minimal gaps and double breasting if needs be to allow the maximum number of boats to use the site." So if anyone is on a visitor mooring then they cannot refuse double breasting. Full link here https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/enjoy-the-waterways/boating/moorings/canal-and-river-mooring-faqs CRT Also state that breasting up may be a necessity "It you don’t fit in the gap, breasting-up is a possibility and in fact a necessity in some extremely busy places like London"
  8. This definitely. Mine got stretched over time primarily caused i think by the rudder pressing flat against the rear lock cill.
  9. Single handed up the Tardebigge a good few year's ago and the crew of a placky cruiser had left every top gate open ahead of me. Plain laziness with no consideration at all. Generally though I find most people are considerate so the above was an exception.
  10. Whilst out of the water it may be worthwhile checking out the health of the bottom cup as 17years of wear may mean it may need building up.
  11. Used this on 2005 liverpool Ebay UCFL Flanged Metric Pillow Block Self Lube Bearing 2 Bolt Flange - HIGH QUALITY 35mm £11.99 + Postage
  12. No he is trying to free a jammed windlass because he used the wrong sized hole 😀 Now that's a generous interpretation. I'm wondering who made money from this? Brian- Has no idea what he us doing. Photographer-Also unaware of correct way to use a windlass Hire Company -Either Made a few Bob for the use of the boat or got free publicity or both. Whoever commissioned the photograph Whoever signed the photograph off. Possibly others. I certainly don't begrudge Brian Blessed or the hire company for making a few Bob from this photo shoot, good luck to them, however there does seem to be a general lack of quality control over the project.
  13. Remember that London and the South East have declared UDI and standard rules and etiquette do not apply.
  14. Slightly clearer view showing winding the wrong way.

    Fire stick/Wifi

Yes I bought one of these and am very pleased with it. Amazed how little power it needs. 8w/12v=0.6666amps https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cello-C1220DVB-Rechargeable-Portable-Analogue/dp/B09GG6PNPB I also have a Fire tablet which I use occasionally.
  16. Here is the wiring diagram for the Barrus 35 (06) And here is a link to the 06 manual. https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/50989992/shire-owners-manual-06-build-33354045-50-pdf-ep-barrus
  17. Not sure which Barrus the op is referring too but they all seem to be much the same setup. It is pretty much as you have deduced in that the manifold and its jacket sit above the starter and do make it a little difficult to both see and access the starter.
  18. A very valid point. I can see very little confidentiality if moored along the towpath as 5mm of steel is not much of a sound barrier. It would be very easy for conversations to be overheard.
  19. I replaced my starter with a s13-294, if you search for one of these, suggest ebay, you should find some photos and diagrams that should help. If it is any use to you I have also replaced the original ignition switch with a Durite ignition switch 4 position BG1-0-351-05 This works for the older style panel, not sure about the newer panels Edit to add I have used these a number of times, excellent company to deal with https://www.startermotoralternators.co.uk/products/yanmar-3tn-4tn-4tnv-12v-starter-motor-s13-94-s13-332-s13-294?variant=39758415790288&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIysjM_PO99wIVRe7tCh1VEwyzEAQYASABEgLbxPD_BwE

  21. Just to be clear fir others, not you Alan, it's not me that's doing the spamming, it's just that your quote only shows my name and not the spammers name. Edit to add now reported the spammer
  22. Recently installed Webasto thetmotop c and used the manufacturers recommended 25% GLYCOL mix. Is this meant for another thread?
  23. You may find this of interest from 2014 https://livingonanarrowboat.co.uk/2014-10-19-newsletter-dealing-with-anti-social-behaviour-on-the-canal-network/
  24. With the basic 1530 timer that appears to be the default. I did find a utube showing how to set the 30 or 60 minutes cutoff, apparently you can only do it when the webasto is running through its programed cycle. Never got mine to work properly but I wasn't to fussed as I just use it for water heating and manual works for me however I would be interested if you have more success. Recently installed mine and that's the best I can get. I do find the basic timer to be a bit frustrating, find very fiddly to set a start time, sometimes it works and other times is don't.
  25. Used Bibles (now that is untrue, let's try again) Used Bimbles twice in the past and was more than happy with what I got. I did monitor there site until something arrived that I wanted I than ordered it without a problem.
