  1. I am sure that the plant I was referring to in the OP was Butterbur. Interestingly, depending on which site you believe, it either cures Migraine or causes Liver failure.
  2. The OP did not specify the age of the children involved. They are certainly not 16 years old but 10 & 11. Both can operate locks. It's just the time in between in which I wanted to occupy them (without x boxes or google)
  3. Can anyone tell me what the giant rhubarb type plant is that grows alongside many canals? I thought it was Plantain but the Google images are not right.
  4. Thanks, everyone for some informative suggestions. I have decided to create my own version of the 'I-Spy' type of book.
  5. Does anyone know if there is a Children's " I-SPY" type of book for Canal journeys? I know there is an official I-Spy on boats in general but it does not appear to have a great canal section. Alternatively, some form of activity book?
  6. As far as I can recall, the red line running up to Westhoughton was the proposed route of the Lancaster Canal circa 1793. The other red line running from around the Bank house area was the proposed Lancaster Canal route to Worsley, via Leigh. The green (ish) line above the red line was the proposed route of the L & L Canal running through Red Moss. A combination of the two from the Wigan Flight top (around where the map says 'steam engine') was what eventually happened.
  7. Hello, What does it cost to run a system like this? Can you have unlimited data? Would it be worthwhile for watching TV (i Player etc.) Sorry about the basic questions but then I am a Luddite.
  8. That's done it. All the bad guys will know what to do now.
  9. Can anyone tell me what the split is on these various quotes or actual costs? That is cost of materials and cost of labour. Also what is the definitive number of undercoats and top coats.
  10. We bought a Liverpool 45' some 7 years ago. Not had any problems in 3000+ hours since then, apart from some Isuzu issues which were easily solved. Liverpool are the Fords of the narrowboat world and yes, there are Ferraris and Rolls out there and also snobbery. In short, great boats, honest price.
  11. I was told, some weeks ago, by the owners of the dry dock, that they are no longer offering a 'diy' service at Worsley. The dock is now only open for employees to work on boats, not owners.
  12. Having read all of the later posts (not the ones referring to the original subject), I have decided on the following course of action: 1. If on wide canals, just close one lock gate. 2. On narrow canals, leave every other lock open. I think this could well please all of the people all of the time.
  13. Hello, I will Pm you with the wiring diagrams for engine and control panel. I am not sure how to add images on the forum. John
  14. Not sure if this as a result of May's influence but interesting all the same Link
  15. The people of Leigh are not best pleased it seems link
  16. I fitted a Propex heater some 5 years ago. It has run trouble free and without maintenance during that time. (Apart from when the Thames decided to fill up the inlet pipe). I have two runs of outlet tubing from a 'Y' piece. One runs directly into the bathroom and the other into the galley. Both can be closed off to direct the heat the other way. It is ideal first thing in the morning when we don't want to light the stove.
  17. I bought one of these last year. Whilst it does work effectively, I found that it made steering quite difficult. Perhaps you need to get used to the extra weight and swing of the tiller.
  18. There is no requirement for alternative means of propulsion IWA advice Or contact: Harbour Master, Manchester Ship Canal Company Queen Elizabeth II Dock Eastham, WIRRAL, CH62 0BB Tel 0151 327 1461 Fax 0151 327 6278
  19. Any idea when and which part? Other threads on this site will explain who to contact and what you need but briefly you will want: Permission and strict times from the Manchester Ship Canal company (Peel) A 'seaworthiness' certificate (different from BSC) Extra long ropes A deep pocket (you have to pay for each lock) We did Weaver to Ellesmere Port last year (no locks) it was great fun and we will probably do the whole length from Salford to Ellesmere Port later this year. Or the whole hog and across the Mersey if anyone is interested.
  20. It's not on the towpath side. there is no other access to that side of the canal (bold bits put in by me)
  21. The Waterside does look good and the mooring is fine with a Supermarket just next door. The food however, in my view, leaves a lot to be desired.
  22. As a Bridgewater Canal user I was very pleased to hear about the new Tesco Superstore and the 3 new Canal Side Restaurants in Leigh, together with a Multi Screen Cinema. Sadly, Canal users are precluded from using any of these as some bright spark has built a new fence to keep the Canal Boat people out. This was a great chance for Leigh to embrace the Canal and make it part of the what the town does, but sadly no. (Leigh planners should look at Skipton and many other Towns) Ah well, just the Waterside then, or carry on to Astley for a proper meal.
  23. I considered a TEG system on my 43' Liverpool but why bother when the KERS is working just fine.
  24. I know someone who has asked BW (prior to CaRT) if they could take over the running of the Marina only to be told "although the building works are completed, there are no plans to open the Marina until 2013 The plans are for a 40 boat Marina with all the usual facilities and I can't see any reason why it could not be open in a couple of months. Seems BW were not seriously trying to attract entrepreneurs.
