  1. We had a nightmare trying to moor stern in on the pontoons at Stratford (Bancroft) Basin last September, we tried two before we found one that had any depth and even then it was a struggle. We wished we'd carried on round the corner to the towpath moorings, it would have saved us about three quarters of an hour! Tim
  2. We moved the ballast to get over the bottom cill of the lock! More seriously to get a lot of weight into the boat in a small gap under the floor we used steel as ballst - not the cheapest but very effective, pictures of how we did it at: http://www.pbase.com/timlewis/ballast_installation Tim
  3. We find that a bit of weight up the front helps Near Stratford! Tim
  4. SOT boat club is still going strong, I am sure they can help you out, address: Endon Wharf Post Lane Endon Stoke-on-Trent ST9 9DT Contact: John Eaves Tel: 079 31 781598 Tim
  5. S'funny, I thought the 2009 season started on Jan 1st! Tim
  6. Sprucing up Fulbourne this weekend. Also WRG Barndance on Saturday - 150 people all trying to look dignified whist dancing in different directions is a sight to be beheld! Tim
  7. As a matter of interest (to me at least) there is an article about this trip in the latest (March) edition of 'Canal Boat' magazine - I am the one in the hat! Tim
  8. Saw an advert in Loot a few years ago for a narrow boat which stated that it was 'still whole'. Took us a few minutes to realse that it should have meant steel hull (Never place an advert by telephone!) Tim
  9. Bottom lock at Ryders Green (Next to Great Bridge ASDA) Tim
  10. If you can find the time feel free to visit the London Canal Museum at Kings Cross. If you phone ahead (020 7713 0836) we might even find you a mooring for your visit, we do charge for overnight stays though. Details: http://www.canalmuseum.org.uk Tim
  11. It was the local authority that took the supermarket to court. Tim PS The IWA manage the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation, they do not own it.
  12. Note that Islington Tunnel is shut in the mornings (0800 - 1100) every weekday morning between 13 and 27th March. Tim
  13. How I remember reading Health and Efficiency as a lad Tim
  14. ... but only if you are over 13.7m (The boat that is) Tim
  15. It's also worth researching the canal at Hazlehurst where two schemes were built and abandoned prior to the present aqueduct being built. Tim
  16. This case seems to rest on the ownership of land rather than navigation rights. Tim
  17. Don't often look at NBW and now I see why - the article tells you absolutely nothing about the background to the case - I am at a loss as to what the whole thing is about! Tim
  18. Have spent many a week over the last few years boating the Severn, Thames, Lee, Stort, Wey, Avon, Soar, Trent, Nene and the Great Ouse and its tributaries without feeling the slightest need to wear a lifejacket. If I had been wearing one I would have been about the only person doing so, so there must be an awful lot of total idiots about! The only time I wear one as a matter of course is when navigating tidal rivers. Tim
  19. Have never bothered with life jackes on the upper severn and we don't normally bother getting the anchor out but saying that in my first ever boating holiday our hire boat's engine failed just above a wier, the only time I have ever used an anchor in anger. It was quite a scary experience, although the river was not flowing fast it took a while for the anchor to catch as the river has quite a smooth sandstone base Tim
  20. Funny that - it excatly describes my weekend on the Wilts & Berks canal! Tim
  21. They vary. The deepest point will be the bottom of the cup that holds the bottom of the rudder in place (The skeg). You should be able to reach down and touch it or as others have said push a pole down to it and measure the wet bit when you bring it out! Tim
  22. I believe that they used to build all their work boats. Tim
  23. We didn't make it to Hannington Bridge but we got Fulbourne (72' lengh, 33" draught) a good couple of miles above Inglesham. We had to reverse about half a mile to where a stream comes in on the south side where we turned with relative ease. There is a deep channel in the middle, what defeated us eventually was a sharp bend! Tim
  24. Organising a WRG working weekend on the Wilts & Berks Canal - just a few more required to get the thing open! Open for anyone to join us Tim 07802 518094
