The colours in the "reversed Stoke Bruerne offside" picture do at least look believable. Generally Mr Essarys art has a false appearance to me with the colours looking too bright.

Is that the cutting that's haunted ? There is one on the Shroppie that old timers won't moor overnight at.

I have one of those and it works OK provided there's enough bolt shank protruding so that the extractor teeth can grip over their whole width. In this case I doubt that will be so.

When you say "pissing" - how much really ? Are you using raw water or a closed circuit cooling system ? The real problem is the sheared bolt which will need careful work to remove, and can't be done without removing the plate. Had the bolt been there, the spanner drop probably wouldn't have done any damage. The joint was weak and probably leaking as shown by the blue sealant squigged in there. Clearly the plate needs to come off to have the gasket and bolt replaced, but could you make it to a boat yard to get it fixed ?

I don't miss the stink of disposed-of carbide in caves. But it does have a nice warm colour.

Well with the last shutdown during the beautiful Spring, perhaps they expect people to be out boating a bit longer into the Autumn. There certainly won't be a water shortage problem !

Meths has some oxygen in its molecule. Paraffin and diesel do not, so will need even more air (ie oxygen) for full combustion. The hydrogen content of the fuel will always burn first, in preference to the carbon in cool or low oxygen conditions. The yellow is caused by particle of carbon (soot ie not fully combusted fuel) in the flame. Is the stove making excessive soot ?

My friend and his wife started married life on a 32' ex Harboro' Marine / Anglo Welsh hireboat, siad to be half of a wooden butty with a steel counter attached. One main cabin plus a small galley and heads, complete with sea toilet. They used to go to the public baths once a week for a private bath. They lived for several years on the S & SY at Mexborough Wharf, and regularly used to get woken by some bumps from a string of Tom Puddings waiting for the locks. Since then they've had several other boats, farms and animals and built their own house. They clearly thrive on doing things the hard way. BTW their honeymoon was backpacking across North Africa.

Heres a little film from this last weekend, featuring the East Lancs railway, Nob End locks on the MBB canal and the Lancs Mining museum.

Gin clear skies yesterday for a walk along the Manchester, Bolton & Bury canal at Nob End. Here the canal crosses a river on a aqueduct, takes a right angle turn up Nob End locks, the the junction at the top. The Meccano bridge is a triumph.
