Go to a boat brokerage - like at Buckby bottom lock. See what they have for sale that you like. It has to be something you like - no point in buying what you dont like even if its cheap / in your price range. Some things can be fixed - knackered engine, poor paint & decor. Some are more difficult - wrong length, wrong internal layout, no pump out tank. And report back.

You can only trust your own survey. Take anything the seller says with the usual pinch of salt. It sounds like its had minimal maintenance in that time, who knows what state the engine is in, or interior fitments..

Driving to Aberystwyth yesterday I was surprised to see this bridge 131 on dry land at Gartmyl on the A483. Looking at the map and on street view, some bits of the Monty are dry - like this place where I guess the road realignment and upgrading has filled the canal bed in. But in other places its in water, with boats and locks appearing to in good condition. There are some lowered bridges, but realistically then how much is navigable in a boat (not canoe) ?

Cool, dark and dry. Probably wrap in tissue paper - though finding acid-free paper may be difficult.

I remember helping to move Gaffer and Growler a few years back. Growler (great name) had a 6 cylinder Lister, and was said to "submarine" if opened up too quickly.

They certainly are a handful. If you want to slow down, just knock the revs off, or in extremis, go into neutral. If you use reverse they'll be straight up the bank. We had the offer of coupling up to a pan and going for push at Braunston rally last year, but decided that was not the time or location for the "first time".

I guess a Kromhout, Widdop or big Bolly engine. Did they get it going I wonder, they take a bit of starting. Reminds me of the TV series traversing the Grand Canal in the E 83 with a similar engine.
