  1. A bit harsh. Your comment, not the rope, hopefully.
  2. But are fatties (or narrowboats) in coastal marina berths cheap enough for what might be average boaters (not even attempting to define that). I don't know, just asking.
  3. @buccaneer66 is usually good at updating threads. It's good CRT have joined these pieces of work together, but I'd have been disappointed if they hadn't in the circumstances. .
  4. It could just be a very badly written piece by a comms department that don't get what they are writing about or their audience, or could be more in it.
  5. It's only in the East Midlands section and there are no details of what government decision they are fighting. Speculation without more details is reasonable, it's completely unclear exactly what he is referring to. A clear explanation would be very useful to allay or confirm concerns, and to confirm what action they are taking and about what.
  6. I can't answer your question but levels have been very low where I'm moored near Chorley. As I don't live aboard I've been leaving the mooring ropes looser than I would like, in case the level rises to its normal height. There was another alert yesterday relating to the Wigan Flight. Excerpt from the alert Please be advised navigation is closed along the Wigan Flight, Lock 65 to Lock 85, on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal due to a blown cill at Lock 68. Our teams are currently investigating and a further update will be provided tomorrow, Thursday 15 June.
  7. There might be misogyny at play in the way some volunteers act but there's a also a need to take personal responsibility for yourself and your boat. If the volunteer, however experienced, is doing something you aren't comfortable with, tell them and insist what happens next. It's your home after all .
  8. This sounds like it might have been a corporate group volunteering day with an over enthusiastic member going beyond their remit. Just a thought.
  9. That's not good enough. They, and you, need to be able to recognise official volunteers, who have hopefully had some training and are trained and expected to follow procedures. They should know who is an official registered volunteer and not allow random walk ups.
  10. I'm sure they would become interested if there was an incident. Who have you complained to and did you describe why it is an issue?
  11. @Alan de Enfield just because you can doesn't mean you have to.
  12. Notice Alert Leeds & Liverpool Canal Location: Navigation Closure: Lock 69, Wigan Flight, Leeds & Liverpool Canal Starts At: Lock 85, Lock 21 Ends At: Lock 65, Top Lock Monday 3 July 2023 08:00 until Friday 14 July 2023 17:00 Type: Navigation Closure Reason: Repair Original message: Over the recent weeks our teams have been investigating fluctuating water levels between Lock 65, Top Lock of the Wigan Flight and Lock 66, Johnsons Hillock on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Our local operations team and engineers have identified severe leakage through the head and tail gates of Lock 69 on the Wigan Flight, as a result causing low water levels through this stretch of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal. Our teams and engineers have planned a repair to fix the leakage at Lock 69. We plan to carry out these works starting on Monday 3 July until Friday 14 July. Unfortunately, due to other arising rising urgent repairs our Reactive Team are unable to prioritise this sooner. However, navigation will remain open until Sunday 2 July and you can find our Summer Operating Times here. To ensure the safety of our customers during this closure padlocks will be placed on Lock 85, Bottom Lock and Lock 65, Top Lock to prevent access on to the Wigan flight. We’re extremely sorry for the disruption this closure will have on your plans to travel along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal during this very busy month of boating. However, this essential work will help to maintain a navigable water level between Lock 65, Top Lock and Lock 66, Johnsons Hillock and prevent us from using extra water during the summer period. If you are affected by this planned closure, please contact the North West Customer Support Team on 0303 040 4040 or via our online webform, before Monday 19 June 2023.
  13. The only way to be "overtaking" starboard to starboard, or port to port, is if the 2 boats are facing in opposite directions, and that's not overtaking. When @LadyG says I was operating reverse propulsion, but momentum intervened! I have an image in my head of her hurtling towards the trip boat, doing the equivalent of a handbrake turn and sidling past in reverse, to prove it is possible to overtake that way after all.
  14. Referring to the other thread about dawdling boats, but also relevant to this. Its always best to not make assumptions about what another boat or car is likely to do and make sure you are in control of your vessel/vehicle regardless of what the other person does. You can't deal with last second changes by the person in front of you but it's best to give yourself enough wriggle room to remain in control of your own situation where ever possible.
  15. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding you, I don't know how you could physically manage to overtake passing starboard to starboard. I thought the general opinion was that (in most but not all circumstances) the overtaking boat would move over to port and pass on the left (their starboard side passing the other boat's port side). The trip boat moving over to starboard would have helped you to do this.
  16. Sorry to be a pain. I don't think this is the right thread to be discussing tllller/engine/prop functionality. I know discussions evolve organically but Im not sure this is the right one. Interesting stuff but a separate thread might be appropriate.
  17. I'm not sure what you are saying or implying.
  18. 1. You've got a great view when approaching the bridge hole from the first picture, not. 2. That's ugly. Why spend fortune on what looks like a floating skip, at least from the outside. 3. There's a certain arrogance that they are okay to be there yet, while you couldn't pass unimpeded, how would they expect a similar sized boat to them to be able to pass. I'm not sure if I should have said arrogance or entitlement, perhaps both.

    Overplating!

If @YSA hadn't seen that survey she would probably never have know about the pitting. Is she duty bound to declare it? Or is it up to a potential buyer, with or without a new survey, to find it, if it's still an issue.
  20. I think we are now paying around £30 a month for our 15 year old whippet. We paid insurance for years for our previous JRT but she was completely bombproof and never had a claim.
  21. Apparently I could get it for just over £15 with free shipping. Any advance on that?
  22. I'd be interested. A bloke on our moorings had a dog that used to hold the ropes. It was a hefty dog.
  23. Update received at 4pm Update on 16/05/2023: We are pleased to advise the repairs to the tail gate at Lock 63 are now complete, and navigation has resumed between Lock 58 to Lock 64, Johnsons Hillock Lock Flight on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
  24. If you go for it, everyone else onboard must be fully accepting that baby and you come first and second 100% of the time.
