  1. Yes. Eberspacher make a few timers/thermostats. I have this one which would be compatible with your D5W.
  2. Getting back to the OP's query...... I've read through the T&Cs of the last marina I was in and it doesn't specifically say the use of illegal drugs is not permitted. It does mention any unacceptable behaviour that is detrimental to the comfort of moorers or staff will result in expulsion so I guess it could fall under this rule. However in my experience they were pretty lax with enforcing the rules....the only one they were hell bent on enforcing was abuse of the bin area. A major investigation was always initiated when someone dumped an old chair or the like there. I suppose that's because it cost them a lot to deal with unsanctioned waste.
  3. I recently hired an all electric day boat when on holiday a few weeks ago. It was based on a lake and recharged from shore power every night. At lower throttle settings it was totally silent while still moving at a reasonable pace. The experience was amazingly tranquil and it occurred to me at the time how nice it would be to have this silence on a narrowboat.
  4. My old Johnson 2hp outboard was like that.....no gearbox at all, just swivel it for astern and stop the engine for neutral!
  5. Indeed. With development I'm sure it could be much improved....I've seen these pods made by mainstream manufacturers (Volvo IPS pod drive) for sea going pleasure craft, but as you say steered hydraulically and in the case of the Volvo versions, computer controlled. And they would certainly be prone to damage on the inland waterways.
  6. CTC has just posted this. Quite an interesting concept.
  7. Oh you were very clear, I mentioned it only in passing! Being too bourgeois or not with low ranking rats is the finest line a man will ever walk.
  8. I've studied and researched their behaviour quite a bit and they absolutely do not want to do this. They are smart and very neo phobic.....they hate new things and will use the same routes when going from nest to feeding area. So to even board your boat suggests these rats were very low ranking members of a very large group and totally desperate for food. As an aside you also know you are in the midst of a huge infestation when you see a rat during daylight hours too, these are also low ranking members of a large group desperate for food.
  9. Thank goodness you spotted it and were able to chase it out. A different time or differently designed boat might have enabled the rat to find a hiding place quickly and unnoticed by you. You must have happened upon quite a bad infestation nearby your mooring spot. For this to happen Rats need a plentiful supply of food, water and good shelter. Is there anything nearby that might be providing this?
  10. In theory. But to actually draw that much power the radio volume would have to be turned up to maximum and be connected to suitable speakers that could actually handle that level of power. In real life you'd never even get close to that amount of power when casual listening.
  11. Yes, but the cumulative effect on energy consumption is significant….for instance multiply that figure by 565 million (number of cars in Europe and North America).
  12. I imagine this is one of these rules that will never be enforced, due to the fact that the cost of having an enforcement team far outweighing any revenue from the relatively few fines they'd dish out.
  13. We lost our dog early last year and are now in that position. You're absolutely right, looking after them properly is certainly tying. There is no doubt that it has left a bit of a hole in our household, the first 6 months after her death were the hardest.....it would have been the easiest thing in the world to go out and get another dog to replace her. But we didn't and the freedom is nice.
  14. Yes you've hit the nail on the head with a lot of recent dog purchases....and of course a lot of these people were working from home for an extended period so the dogs were never left alone. Cue serious separation problems when they returned to work. I remember a dog trainer once telling me that you need to do everything you ever intend to do with your dog by 6 months of age....leaving them alone, driving them in the car etc etc. After this age it is very difficult to resolve issues caused by poor upbringing.
  15. Not sure all the tales of grabbing the B**** or sticking a finger up the dogs A*** actually work. But getting a rope or similar around the neck and twisting tight will always work....it sets the dog's gag reflex off and they always open their mouth when that happens.
  16. ⬆️ This. I'd strongly advise at all costs to retain some sort of property if he's going to move onto a boat. If he can't mortgage or raise funds, sell and buy a smaller property to rent out.
  17. I imagine current thoughts on this forum haven't changed. There are a number of fairly recent threads on the subject and the outcome is always the same.....a furious argument between a minority of vocal compost toilet users (9% of boats on CRT waters have separating toilets) and the rest of us ensues. Having had a compost toilet for a while and ditched it, I can tell you it's just easier and less hassle to live with a cassette or pump out toilet on CRT waters. It's funny how our experiences shape us....the smell of Aquachem is much better than the smell of rancid pure urine in a separator toilet.
  18. Or a generator….you can even get cocooned ones you know!
  19. Yes I was thinking some sort of method could be found to mount them. I guess the big limitation on a boat is the relative shortness of the umbilical between the inside and outside unit. Oh yes, a not insignificant power draw. But in todays world of gas free all electric boats with large Lithium battery banks and equally large solar setups, it would probably be feasible for some. Definitely so if you are on a shoreline.
  20. Maybe one of those cool my camper units might be more suitable for a narrowboat's power limitations. They say it can run from a 700w inverter and draws 450w when running. Only 2559 btuh though so would only cool half the boat, and only designed to be jury rigged on a window so storage might be an issue when it's not in use.
  21. She looks very nice, I like the paint job. Is that an Aintree shell?
  22. At 6 weeks that is very good.....you've got a very chilled baby! It's funny how they all come out differently and it's just pot luck ....one of our kids would have been a nightmare at that age on that boat while the other would have been ok (ish). Thanks for the report!
  23. You should look everywhere....you never know where the perfect boat for you might pop up for sale. Rugby boats are good......they are so trusted that during the boom in boat sales post covid, a lot of their boats were selling over the phone as soon as they were advertised. Not sure if the market is quite that hot now though.
